When I think of Texas, I think of the oil industry, cattle ranching and megachurches. When I think of Los Angeles, I think of smog, tall palm trees, gang members wielding assault rifles & beautiful Mexican women. When I think of Atlanta, I think of trees, chicken wings, strip clubs, and streets named Peachtree.

When I think of South Florida, I think of cornerbacks.

Remember when I said in the WR thread that college coaches were annually scouring South Florida for receivers? They are downright jonesing like Pookie in New Jack City looking for defensive backs every year. This region breeds corners like West Africa breeds military dictatorships.

However, 2022 might have been the worst crop of cornerbacks in South Florida history. COVID played a major part in derailing kids' recruitments, but it was just an abysmal class last year. This year is much better, trending back to the 2017-2021 classes. We have a crop of guys that I know will be productive college players barring catastrophe.

Damari Brown, American Heritage (6'1" 180) - Son of former UM DB Selwyn & brother of UCF transfer/UM DB Davonte. Looks like a Pro Bowler on the huff. Natural cover corner with length & fluidity. Stepped up in big time games to make plays. Had to wait turn in loaded AH secondary, but made the most of his time once given the starting reins. Aggressive hitter. Reminds me of former Dillard/Ohio State/NFL DB Chris Gamble. Miami signee.

Antione Jackson, Dillard (6'0" 175) - Has been a press coverage terrorist since he was 8 years old. Elite ball skills reminiscent of Marcus Peters. Physical. No track times but plays explosive. Physicality + ball skills leads me to believe he may be a better safety at the next level. Reclassified from 2024 to 2023 to sign with Miami, then requested release from his LOI and enrolled at East Carolina. Off-the-field red flags, hopefully he can mature.

Daniel Harris, Gulliver Prep (6'2" 175) - Looks like a top 5 pick. Same exact athletic profile as Tyson Campbell. 10.74 100. Despite all that athleticism, still a bit raw & will need work. Physical tackler but must improve form. Will need to hit the weight room before seeing serious playing time. Played for Miami Immortals. Brother of Texas A&M/Louisiana-Monroe DE Donell Harris. Georgia signee.

Luke Evans, Chaminade Madonna (6'2" 165) - Stoneman Douglas transfer. Father, Percy, played football at Cincinnati & uncle, Mike, played at Michigan & was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs. Long, graceful corner who uses his length to break up passes. Great ball skills. 11.25 100. 4.61 GPA. Mississippi State signee.

Dwight Bootle, Miami Palmetto (5'10" 170) - Played at Killian as a junior before transferring back to Palmetto. As a sophomore, started in a secondary with 5 stars Jason Marshall and Corey Collier & played better than both of them. Natural cover corner with hips like Evian water. Plays all over the secondary & I actually thought he played better at safety than corner. Hard hitter. 67 tackles & 22 pass breakups as a junior. Injured as a senior. Playing style reminds me of Tiawan Mullen. Starred for South Florida Express. Brother, Dicaprio, was a 4 year starter at Nebraska from 2017-2020 and just won a Super Bowl ring with the Kansas City Chiefs. No track times, but his brother was a 10.64 100/4.34 40 kid and they have the exact same play speed. Nebraska signee.

Edwin Joseph, Chaminade Madonna (6'0" 185) - Was a productive receiver in the Chaminade aerial attack before trying his hand at DB as a senior and succeeding. Wins reps with long arms & plus athleticism. Still raw at the position & will need time to develop. Good hips. Ball skills transferred from offense to defense. I thought he was a better WR than DB, but he has the talent to play either spot. FSU signee.

Kimari Robinson, St. Thomas Aquinas (5'10" 170) - McArthur transfer. Sticky corner with fluid hips & great ball skills. Put up best performances during STA's playoff run. No verified track time but has great game speed. Duke signee.

Shamar McNeil, American Heritage (6'3" 175) - Was a reserve in the Patriots' loaded secondary up until senior year. Plays off-ball a lot & excels in zone coverage. With all that length, I wish they would've had him lined up in press man more. No track times but has good speed on film. Missouri signee.

Rayquan Adkins, Miami Northwestern (5'10" 155) - Started out at Carol City, then Dade Christian, before finishing at the West as a senior. Elite ballhawk & natural cover corner. 9 picks with 4 returned for TDs as a junior. Can play man or zone & blessed with great footwork. Good tackler. Cincinnati signee.

Kaleb Barnett, Miami Jackson (5'11" 185) - Native of the Bahamas that played football for the first time in 2021. Played at Miami Christian as a junior, before briefly transferring to Northwestern in the spring, then playing his senior year at Miami Jackson. Island speed (10.7 100) and it shows up on film. Still raw but shows excellent fluidity & a twitchy backpedal. Will come up & make a hit in run support. Temple signee.

Trimaine Brown, Homestead (5'11" 150) - Miami Northwestern transfer. 10.41 100 and 20.84 200. That speed definitely shows up on tape. Speedy utility DB whose best position IMO is at nickel. Electric return man & will immediately contribute there. Bowling Green signee.

Teremun Lott, Inlet Grove (6'0" 170) - Seminole Ridge transfer. Two-way speed demon from Devin Hester's neck of the woods. 11.04 100 but plays even faster. Defensively, shows fluid hips & good coverage. Old Dominion signee.

D'Angelo Ponds, Chaminade Madonna (5'9" 160) - If you don't know anything about South Florida, just know that we're gonna produce a lot of feisty nickel corners with track speed. Ponds is the latest in a long line of them. 10.47 100 and 21.54 200 and it shows up on tape. Plays some safety as well. Underrated. James Madison signee.

Darrell Sweeting, The Benjamin School (5'10" 175) - One of my favorite players in this class. Three sport athlete (football, basketball, track) with star potential. Starred at wideout for Benjamin. Lockdown corner, only allowing one (1!) completion as a senior. 12 PPG, 3 dimes and 3 boards on the basketball court as a senior, to go along with a 54% FG% and 36% from 3. On the track, 11.03 100, 22'11" long jump and 44'6.75" triple jump. Cousin, Cre'Von LeBlanc, was a standout DB at FAU before bouncing around a few NFL rosters. The kid is a MONSTER. Temple is sneaking a stud out of South Florida.

Nazir Ward, Miami Northwestern (6'0" 155) - Wiry outside corner that wins with length & mirroring ability. Member of the West's 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams. Western Kentucky signee.

Victor Evans III, Monsignor Pace (6'0" 160) - Started out at Miami Northwestern before transferring to Edison, then finally finishing his career at Pace. Aggressive corner with good technique. Does very well in zone. Track background. FIU signee.

Romello Flowers, Avant Garde (6'1" 185) - Stranahan transfer. Brother of Boston College superstar & Ravens 1st round pick Zay. No track times but EXPLOSIVE at receiver, corner and returner. Bowling Green signee.

Trevaughn Martinez, Dillard (5'10" 175) - Utility player that played all over Dillard's secondary. Good ball skills. Has good pop as a hitter. No track times but is fast on film. Western Carolina signee.

Malik Willis, Inlet Grove (6'2" 175) - Palm Beach Lakes transfer. Also plays basketball & volleyball. Leggy press corner with good footwork & the ability to mirror. Also plays WR. 3.4 GPA. Campbell signee.

Willard Ferrell, Miami Killian (6'2" 165) - Florida Christian transfer. Good athlete with length. Brother, Jalon, is a starting safety at UMass. Presbyterian signee.

Wish we made more of a move on Edwin Joseph especially after what happened with A Jackson. Always been a fan of Luke Evans game, will be an interesting one to track at Miss State they've been producing some NFL corners lately. Temple and Bowling Green did some work this past cycle.
