OK, we had one last regular season Footballpalooza at Coach JB's Football Bar and Cigar Lounge. Another full Saturday of football. Some thoughts on what I saw on Week 14...
- Georgia-GaTech might have been the game of the year. But what I came away thinking from this Friday night classic was that the college game -- which is becoming more and more like professional football -- should just adopt the NFL overtime format.
I just don't think a game should come down to a bunch of plays that start at the 3 yard line (after the second overtime). This is like an extra inning game in baseball being decided with a bunting contest or something.
Now, if you're going to use this current format, I would adjust so that from the first OT, the ball is given to the offense at midfield. This way a team has at least get a first down or two to get into field goal range. Regardless, this might have been the 'game of the year'
- Deion Sanders and the Buffs go 9-3 in year two. By any measure that is a huge success. The years that Travis Hunter (presumptive Heisman Trophy winner) and Shaduer (top 5 pick) is icing on the cake. I don't know if Coach Prime will win 'Coach of the Year' honors, but he's certainly be invited to the award banquet.
- LeNorris Sellers has a Vince Young vibe to him. Keep this in mind, he's just a RS freshman. His best ball is in front of him. He willed the Gamecocks to a huge win over Clemson at Death Valley. He's a fast runaway locomotive that nobody wants to tackle. I think he's a guy who can be a Heisman candidate in the future
- Ohio St-Michigan was a stunner to me. Yeah, I get it, it's a rivalry game, but geez, the Wolverines were putrid on offense this season and I figured at 'the Horseshoe', the Buckeyes would find a way. And now, Ryan Day is officially cemented as the modern day John Cooper (who in years like 96 and 98 had as much talent as anyone in the country and didn't win national titles)
This loss reminded me a lot of the 1996 game that Cooper lost where he kept rotating QB's (shoutout to Stanley Jackson and Bobby Hoying!!) vs Michigan, and a really good Ohio State lost their only game of that season on their way to a Rose Bowl win
But in this era, a loss like this doesn't knock you out of the national title hunt. Ohio St will still be in the playoffs and Day still has a chance at redemption. But short of winning it, my guess is a lot of Buckeye fans want him outta there. Will Howard finally cost OSU with his play. But to be fair, that game plan was awfully conservative, and perhaps downright timid
- Speaking of which, Kyle McCord sliced and diced Miami's defense in their 42-38 Cuse win. Would Ohio St have been better off with McCord as their QB1? Great first year for fiery Fran Brown. He should also be in the coach of the year discussion
- There is a coach that likes to say, ''If it's not OK in losing, it's not OK in winning." This brings to mind the Miami defense which has been bad since late September and never really got better. And after awhile, unless Cam Ward and that offense could bail them out, well, it was going to eventually cost the Hurricanes a game or two
I can honestly say that this secondary is the worst Ive seen as a UM fan (yes, worse than the Butch Davis probation year, which at least had guys like Duane Starks). But from a schematic and fundamental standpoint it was very flawed. And while the talent needs to be upgraded, quite frankly, so does the football IQ of the players on that side of the ball
Oh, that coach who said that above quote?
Mario Cristobal.
- Since the early weeks of the season all Oregon has done is win, one way or the other. Not many teams can say that. Hats off to Dan Lanning for the job he's done
- The Longhorns tried their best to give that game to the Aggies in the second half, but they were clearly the better team at Kyle Field on Saturday night. They looked like a legitimate top 4 team. Now the rematch UGA in the SEC title game. If Ewers plays clean, this is a squad that can win it all in my view.
- Saw a bunch of fights after flag planting incidents. My reaction?..... GOOD!! Honestly, it beats a bunch of jersey swapping. Some ol fashioned hatred and vitriol is what makes college football great. Glad to see it still matters to our fine young men of America!!
