The key is Candle is deserving of moving up in the coaching ranks. Toledo has hit its ceiling. Moving up to a bigger job might require him to take a P5 OC job for consideration at another P5 program HC opportunity.

Heard he openly reached out to VT, Illinois in the past, Michigan State last year and he’s not getting any traction.

Thank for this. Was just about to ask but I was misinformed. I thought those programs reached out and he declined. Makes me feel better that he would take the job here

Has anyone ever left a HC job at a mid major to be an OC at a bigger program without getting canned? Hope it happens but gotta wonder the rationale unless it's more pay and he wants to live in Miami

Yeah, I’m where you’re at. He’s been at Toledo for 6 years and has done well. I would not be surprised if P5 comes calling soon for HC jobs. Now he’d take an OC gig?

So would another 50.names. Namely those who have been an OC. Dorsey is a big question mark at this point. Great football mind, but that's a high risk hire getting a green OC.

I believe Candle was the OC from 2012-2016 (not sure if he's still calling plays as the HC). Here is Toledo's offensive rankings from 2012-2016 (using the F+ ratings system).

2012: 65th
2013: 35th
2014: 27th
2015: 47th
2016: 13th

As HC:

2017: 37th
2018: 39th
2019: 91st
2020: 39th
2021: 76th

That's 6 top 5 offenses.... at Toledo... in 10 years. Pretty **** good. Plus he brings invaluable HC experience with him.
