May have changed but when I was in Italy if arrested you had no bail. Stayed in jail until your trial. Someone had to bring you food or you starved. . Was told one of American embassy jobs in Italy was making sure Americans in jail got food. This was 40 years ago so lots have changed since then I am sure.
