We all know our defense is much improved.. But here is some real proof of how much more efficient we are defensively.
Below is a breakdown I did of Yards Allowed per MINUTE of Possession...
As you can see, we're averaging slightly over 9 yards allowed per minute of posession... In 2012, we only allowed less than 12 yards ONCE!!... which was against Bethune Cookman.

This stat is very very telling of our defense and I'm interested to see how it develops throughout the season.. Just wanted to give you guys some REAL STATS...

In Golden I trust.

Good stuff Biz.

Hopefully that gets even lower against Savannah State and USF. This defense isn't good enough yet to take games off.

Wow, thanks for the work. But why yards/min instead of just yards/play, a stat you can just read from the box score?

The yards allowed last year was just staggering for ANY DEFENSE, let alone a defense from Miami.

Interesting analysis. Back in the '80's, I had a friend who was a UM graduate also with a graduate degree from Harvard. He was an economist. He used to analyze our series and found that just changing twenty yards in starting point on a series made a huge difference in whether we scored. In other words, scoring success was much, much higher, probably higher than anticipated intuitively, if we started on the 40, as opposed to starting on the 20. That extra 20 yards meant a **** of a difference. I guess the extra plays the team had to run to get that extra 20 yards produced more mistakes, and more unsuccessful offensive plays.

In other words, field position in starting a drive is highly important, and special teams are critical. Having a great punter and kickoff person are crucial. Superior returners also make a big difference. I guess another factor is, when you start from the middle of the field, you have an expanded number of plays in your repertoire, and there are more high-risk, high-reward plays that you can run. These are plays you might want to stay away from when deeper in your own territory.

I don't know if that analysis would hold up today. It seems that, over the past ten or so, we've become more of a quick-strike offense, hitting on big plays to get our scores. I don't know. Unfortunately, my friend, who was a UM grad in the '50's, and hence much older, passed away at the end of 1999. I wish I could hear some of his analysis now.

Miami is currently ranked 34th in Total Defense and that doesnt take in account the offense has been terrible on 3rd down conversions which directly effects opponent Time of possession.

Miami is also ranked....

7th in Team Sacks

2nd in Redzone Defense

6th in Fumbles recovered

24th in Turnovers Gained

all w/ it just being 2 games played.... This Defense is Dominating.

Granted it's only two games, but I agree this defense dominating and should get better as the season progresses. Coach D deserves major credit for modifying the third down pass rush. We're using more of an upfield approach on third and long situations. That's something I've wanted to see the last two years.

IMO, this defense could be championship caliber if we would consistently redirect inside receivers with force. Perryman is the only guy that does it and he doesn't do it with any consistency. The way our edge rushers get up the field and turn the corner the missing piece to getting home with pressure is disrupting routes. Against the gator we could have possibly had three more sacks as the pressure was just a nanosecond away from getting there, but the receivers had free stemming into their routes. Disrupt the timing of routes and this defense has a chance to take the next step.

Not to take any team for granted, but after the next two weeks they should be top 20 at least.
