Haven;t seen this anywhere and thought it was interesting. I disagree with some of the teams in the teens being ahead of Miami, although the top 10 is solid. Figure it would lead to a good discussion.

22. Miami

Pros: With the possible exception of USC and UCLA, no school in the country has a better local recruiting base. And while the Canes have struggled in recent years, the program won a national championship as recently as 2001 and played for a title in ’02.

Cons: Miami has the smallest fan base of the top 25 teams on this list. Last season, the Canes ranked 44th in the nation in attendance, averaging 47,719 per game at Sun Life Stadium. The facility is 20 miles from campus and lacks the big-time college football atmosphere.

Final Verdict: Miami is an intriguing job. The recruiting base is outstanding — which gives you a great opportunity to win — but the position lacks many of the other qualities that make coaching at a big-time school so attractive.

Good write up, and fair assessment of the UM job, IMHO. I'd have us about 5-6 spots higher personally, just because the ceiling is so high at UM, but that's just me.

I'm surprised they have VT ahead of Miami. Other than that, hard to argue with them. Obviously I'd have Miami higher, but all the other schools ahead of UM can be justified for where they're at.

It's one of the best gigs in the country for a HC who wants to win and is capable of being creative to work around the stadium issue. LULZ at UCLA arguably having an equal recruiting base. No way the UM job should be that low.

Always an interesting discussion. I'd personally go with:
1. Texas
2. UF
3. Ohio St.
4. FSU
5. LSU
6. Texas A&M
7. Oklahoma
8. Penn State.
9. USC
10. Georgia
Miami around 15
The common traits of the top 10? $$$ and an elite local recruiting base

No issue with Miami's ranking. Shocked at Kansas State. USF, Syracuse & Cincy are better jobs??

Probably the same old things the national media always focuses on. Facilities, stadium situation, and much smaller alumni base (thus less $$$).

LULZ at any UM fans with knowledge of this program claiming they buy into these foolish rankings. I can see an angry fsu or ufag honk claiming that's a good spot for UM. Our fans crack me up with their Even Steven fake fair guy arm-length evaluation of our program.

Ax Alshermond if he'd leave here to go to KSU, USF, Syracuse or Cincy. He'd bash a hole in your soft spot and smash your infantile brain with a bottle of hair gel for being dumb enough to ax that question. Al turned down way better jobs than those to stay here with UM in the middle of a horrific nightmare with the ncaa.

I think 4Canes was referring to USF, Cincy, and Syracuse being above K-State. None of those teams are near Miami.

Agreed on the former.

It's a great job for someone who wants to prove himself and then move along. It's not a great job for an established coaching icon, unless that person builds his creds @ Miami (a la what Golden could do).

It's not just the fanbase. Resources for assistants and staff (compare what Saban has to work with). Media environment (way more hostile than most state schools/small towns). Cost of living. Salary and related income. Glare of the NCAA. Local leeches in the Miami HS environment. There's a lot of headache that comes with the UM job that make it less attractive than many big-time state programs. And less in the way of benefits. But as a launching pad, hard to compete with it for anyone. Go to Miami, win, move on. That should work for someone with skills.

Hey, it's fun to read and makes for interesting conversation, but there are holes all over this thing. Key factors that should go into ranking jobs (order is subject to debate): 1. Ability to win big; 2. Salary and ability to pay HC and staff; 3. Facilities, private jets to travel/recruit and such perks; 4. Fertile local or regional recruiting base; 5. Strong conference as national launching pad (TV exposure/rankings/recruiting); 6. Fan passion and support/full stadiums; 7. Athletic endowment/Deep pocketed boosters (helps Oregon to have Phil Knight; Oklahoma State to have T. Bone Pickens); 8. Athletic budget; 9. Career launching pad (ie, previous coaches got better college or NFL jobs); 10. NCAA history of violations.

Examples where this list is skewed start with Stanford at 47 - one spot ahead of South Florida. Stanford has excellent facilities, one of the top endowed athletic programs in the country, launching pad for previous head coaches, recruiting base in California and nationally, commitment to winning and on and on.

Arkansas is way too low at 28. Oklahoma State is too low - right now a better program and job than Oklahoma. Likewise, Texas A&M is too low. And no way VA Tech is a better job than Miami - other than coaching pay and the fact you can operate under the radar in the hills of Virginia.

Logical top dozen, based on events of today and the near future - not what used to be.

1. Alabama
2. Ohio State
3. Florida
4. Texas
5. Michigan
6. LSU
7. Texas A&M
8. Oklahoma State
9. Oklahoma
10. Georgia
11. Oregon
12. Notre Dame

Well said Ethnic. Hopefully once Golden tames the locals and has the success that we all know is possible he'll see it as the place he wants to leave his legacy at.
