from ESPN Insider:

Randy Shannon has emerged as the favorite to become East Carolina's new defensive coordinator according to Pirate Radio 1250 AM in Greenville. Shannon was recently named Arkansas' linebackers coach.

East Carolina finished 87th in total defense last season under the supervision of defensive coordinator Brian Mitchell. Mitchell was relieved of his duties Jan. 4.

The interesting aspect regarding ECU's interest in Shannon is the former Miami head coach has generally been a proponent of a 4-3 base defense. The Pirates employed a 3-4 base the past two seasons. Another scheme change could be in the Pirates' future if Shannon is hired by East Carolina head coach Ruffin McNeill.

Can't imagine he wants his resume to look like this...

July 2012 - Dec 2012: TCU LB Coach
Dec 2012 - Jan 2013: Arkansas LB Coach
Jan 2013 - Present: ECU Defensive Coordinator

Makes perfect sense.
1 - He doesn't want to just be a position coach. After being a d-coordinator and head coach, it's tough to take 2 steps back, even if it was at a top program like Arkansas.
2 - We've seen that he doesn't like putting in a lot of time recruiting. He has shown the willingness to go after top recruits, but he never went and visited all the schools and put in the endless hours most top recruiters do. Usually, the position coaches do that while the coordinators work on a select few.

top program? did you not witness that hot mess this year? SEC yes but not Arkansas. By having a 1 year coach it did them nothing good in recruiting and that team is going to be hurting for a couple years

How the **** did we make that guy the head coach of the Univerity of Miami??????
