It's my beleif Donna Shalala will lead the fight for NCAA reform that will allow the major conferences more control of their destiny. Her vocal complaints about how unfair the NCAA was in their investigation of Miami has already emboldened the SEC, Big 12 and ACC commissioners to warn the NCAA they must change now, not later.

No she won't. This is her swan song. She's going to retire soon.

I agree with this, though I think "soon" is a relative term. IMO, she'll stick around through the end of the current major fundraising campaign, which I believe runs through May of 2016...so 2 1/2 to 3 years. I doubt she'll want to focus on the NCAA after the UM case is done.

Wrong, she realizes what a popular uprising her accurate criticism of the NCAA started leading to the major conferences telling the NCAA there will be major changes. I expect Donna to be at Miami for at least two more years but she could accept an appointment from the big conferences to create a new NCAA division or a new organization. She sincerely believes the NCAA is an antiquated mess and look for Mike Slive of the SEC to get Donna involved.

This would take other University presidents supporting her in this role and I just don't see it. ACC schools support us against the NCAA but they have financial reasons too. The ACC itself wouldn't even vote her as a leader, they would take a Carolina school instead. She is doing great for the University of Miami but that is it. Every schools president is well liked and connected, its their job and a big part of raising money.

Interestingly enough Bleacher Report names Donna Shalala as one of the most powerful people in college athletics specifically her stance a with the NCAA's need for immediate reform.

"The president of the University of Miami, Donna Shalala may not have the pull of a conference commissioner, but her influence on the game has been lasting.

Shalala spearheaded Miami’s move from the Big East to the ACC in 2004, a shift that directly resulted in the conference splitting into divisions.

This is also the move that eventually spelled the demise of the Big East and made major conference realignment seem doable.

Shalala’s name is back in the media due to Miami’s prolonged case with the NCAA.

The NCAA’s mishandling of the case of Miami booster Nevin Shapiro case put Shalala in the position to lead the charge to question the NCAA’s authority.

Regardless of how it plays out, Shalala is likely to leave her mark on the proceedings and the future of the relationship between the NCAA and its member institutions."

I'll add this; At the Big 12 media day, nearly every non-coach that spoke (commissioner, AD's, etc.) mentioned the need to reform the NCAA. IIRC the Big 12 commish even threatened that the B12 universities would pull out of the NCAA if things didnt change soon.

The ground-swell is happening now.

From the outside looking in, I could kinda see Donna taking an advisory role (for 24 months or so) on a committee to recommend reforms to the NCAA. It would be a nice swan song for her.

I used to think that she would leave to work for Hillary if she would have beaten obama in the 2012 primary. Now, even if Hillary wins in 2016, Donna will be 75 by the time the she devil is sworn in. I no longer think that's a realistic option.

SFbaycane that's exactly what I meant, it something he would love to do as well. She could be Mark Emmert's savior as well but there are a lot of burnt bridges there. The NCAA's COI ruling could also change the dynamics already in play; a harsh Miami penalty could split the NCAA in half.

She will not have to….

In case anyone did not notice the commissioners of all five major football conferences had negative remarks toward the NCAA during their media dates. Swofford was the tamest. The others were much more pointed especially the commissioners from the Big 12 and the PAC 10.

The tide against the NCAA is already turning.

There has to be a new "major" division of the NCAA or a new organization all together. In any event there will be a lot of negotiations required, committees to create rules and procedures. Donna Shalala is the right person.

Yes the big conferences want to get away from the NCAA b/c they are sick of the small schools with no money controlling what the big boys can do, not that the NCAA is punishing poor ole Miami. We should be careful what we wish for; we aren't exactly the richest school and when the Alabamas, Texases, NDs, etc decide they think schools should be able to spend more, should be able to lift many recruiting restrictions, and should be able to pay students (as some have already suggested) will we be able to keep up?

I know many of you will say they already pay them, but what happens when they dont have to hide it? Sure, it might start off $2K per student per year, but what happens when that keeps inching up? What happens when Alabama boosters can openly take kids out to dinner? Or worse, a school that is not on top of the world but has lots of money to spend (Hello T Boone Pickens and Okie State) can do so. I know Miami is extremely popular in the ratings, but we currently split that money evenly with the ACC, so unless that changes, would we be able to keep up?

Even if they don't allow boosters to interact with the recruits (do you trust the SEC more than the NCAA to regulate this?), right now, on the books, Miami and Alabama spend about the same amount per football player (~$39K vs ~$40K), but at the end of the year Miami made ~$7M on the football team vs Alabama who made ~$45M. If you dont think schools like Alabama will use this to their advantage, you have to be kidding yourself.

I don't like the NCAA one bit, but alternative isn't always better.

Nothing could be worse than the NCAA as presently composed and run. A new NCAA Divsion or a new organization composed of ACC, SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, Paciific 12, Mountain West and maybe the American Athletic is a viable alternative.

I don't think Donna is focused on the NCAA she's interested in the whole University's health. She has bigger fish to fry.

Really? Replace one corrupt, incompetent organziation with a corrupt incompetent leader like Shalala? Plus someone actually cited Bleacher Report as a credible news site? WTF is this?

Shalala is the problem. She glad hands and accepts tainted money, talks her pal Barry Alvarez to invest and lose with Shapiro and then sits back and acts all pious as if the NCAA is the ONLY guilty party in the whole equation.

She should be burned at the stake but even that wouldn't kill the troglodyke. Our fan base just don't get it. She is the common denominator in the decade long decline. We have gone through multiple coaches, AD's, players. The one fould smelling constant has been the troll. I know facts like this make some fools angry but I don't care, it's the truth.

Also the truth is Donna is perfectly happy with 7-5 seasons as long as UM is portrayed in a positive light. Let that sink in. The sooner she is deported the sooner UM football will be back. Until then enjoy the mediocrity.
