During Miami’s Junior Day event last weekend, the Hurricanes hosted a ton of local and out of state prospects. One of the most important attendees might have come from just down the road at Miami Central, though, as 2021 4-star Miami OL commit Laurence Seymore was able to take the time to get on campus again and start building relationships with some of UM’s new offensive staff members.
“It went pretty good, they had me talking to coach (Garin) Justice and meeting the new offensive coordinator (Rhett Lashlee),” Seymore said. “The way it seems, they’re going to be great. I was also talking to coach (Stephen) Field, just enjoying the time I had up there.”
What was the Miami staff’s message to Seymore?
“Every coach has come in saying ‘We need you, you fit our offense perfect.’”
Last month, the Canes switched out OL coach Butch Barry for Justice, and since the change, Seymore says he’s heard from Justice every day.
“It was a big change, because coach Justice is more calm and his vibe is cool,” Seymore said. “I feel like he has a different type of coaching style than coach Barry. He’ll let you be a little more free but he’s still going to coach you up hard. I feel like we’re going to have a great relationship.”
Seymore’s father was also on visit with him and took a liking to Justice as well.
“He loved the visit. When we got home, we talked about it and he loved the way coach Justice talked and how he’s going to coach me,” Seymore said of his father. “It’s just a vibe coach Justice gave off.”
While Seymore is certainly a priority for UM to retain in their class, a teammate of his at Miami Central is also getting a lot of attention from Lashlee and his offensive staff.
“I’m trying to get Yulkeith (Brown) to Miami,” Seymore said. “He told me he’s going to let me know but he wants to visit LSU first real quick.”
After a losing season in 2019, the Canes’ 2021 class has already taken a hit with multiple decommitments and there has been rumors that Seymore could be the next one. He denied that, however, saying the Junior Day visit eased a lot of his concerns with Miami.
“I’m still 1,000% committed, I just want to take visits,” Seymore said.
Those visits will come this spring and Seymore expects to see FSU, LSU, Oregon, and Tennessee. With the 2021 class set to become the main cycle of interest later this week, Seymore says he’s never been recruited harder. As he committed to Miami nearly two years ago while still a freshman in high school, Seymore hasn’t taken many visits to other schools.
“I just want to go see other colleges and see how I feel,” Seymore said. “I’m getting recruited heavy right now, and I’ve never really had the opportunity to see other schools.”
During his junior season, Seymore mostly played left tackle and was a huge part in the Rockets’ title run, paving the way for a top-notch ground game.
“I did me. I made one dude quit – he didn’t want to play anymore and took himself out of the game,” Seymore said. “I played my style of football. It was a competitive run because we played Northwestern, Palmetto – they were a great team. I thought it would be easy but it wasn’t. Naples, blew them out the water. Dillard, blew them out the water. It was a fun season for me, but next year is going to be a whole different me.”
What will he be working on over the offseason to get to that next level of his game?
“Right now, I’m working on getting stronger - my max bench press jumped up to 325 to 375,” Seymore said. “I got some speed, but I need to get a little bit faster and turn some fat into muscle.”
