I have a question for some of the older more knowledgable guys here. How come you never hear things like, "I hate everything about them" and things like that in interviews anymore over our rivals? Are teams really that afraid of giving the other team bulletin board material or is it something else?

IMO times have changed. With social media all these guys remain in contact with each other. Also, Miami & FSU always respected each other. Since the Gators p ussied out on the series we do not have a real hated rival from the players perspective.

i think it was heating up in 09 but us losing the last few years to FSU has cooled the rivalry down. I for on think VT is always a big game for our players in terms of rivalry. It usually has a direct impact on coastal standings whether for us or them. After our disappointments against UNC and UVA I would think i players consider those a meaningful rivalry game whether we want to see it that way or not

24hr news cycle and social media....would just create too much of a distraction nowadays.

The last thing Miami needs to do is give FSU locker room material. Once the roster is completely overhauled and Miami has depth at all positions with studs oozing out of the seems we'll see more **** talking. We're not there yet.

So social media has impacted rivalries? I guess I can see that. It doesn't seem like any rivalry is like it use to be. But I gotta believe there are players on these teams that hate the other team.

this is not a FSU Miami thing this is all over the country...coaches have pulled this kind of stuff off the table...some players still run their mouths and usually get in trouble over it...its just our new era we live in....soft shoulders.
The last huge call out was Murphy at UF when he called it the U...and he torched us.

Smack just is not tolerated by coaches anymore...

Kids are more friendly nowadays because of the internet. MJ and all those guys back in the day rarely talked to the Ewings of the world on a constant basis. I bet they didnt even know what they were doing, now u got people that follow everyone and know everything so I guess the hate goes away.

A few things.
1) New Era where "friendly, respectful competition" is encouraged.

2) Too much respect

3) Stakes; Hatred is bread out of playing for high stakes. Look at the bulls and heat. Up until recently Bull v Heat really wasn't a big deal. Now that they are playing for championships it becomes a bigger deal.

The biggest down fall is this... we are in opposite divisions. Which to me is the dumbest alignment I've EVER seen. This potential rematch sucks, its take the importance out of this game. Sure for the national title picture both teams must win this game. But in terms of making a BCS bowl and winning the conference (which is all the recruits will remember) this game means nothing as there can be a re-match in 4-5 weeks. When the playoff happens this game will mean even less than it does now.

We should have been in the same division and VaTech Clemson should have been in the other division. This game would have meant the season. And we could have still crossed match with the other 2 teams.

Well, In my opinion. The point of having us play in opposite divisions makes perfect sense. We could possibly reap the rewards of playing each other twice a year. I am sure the ACC would like that. If we were taking care of business in the last ten yrs these games would mean a ton. If both teams are in the top ten its a huge game. To have a huge game twice a year is a benefit for the conference. And our fans. Do you think if we beat them they will not be looking forward to the acccg? And if we lose, but beat VT, we will be fuggin DROOLING over a potential second chance at FSU. Especially with a chance to take them out of the NC. Ohh thats good TV right there!

I think we are also doing a little bit of a rope a dope here. The media is crowning them halfway through the season when they really haven't proven much...so why not let them? Don't give them any bulletin board anything and make it harder for Jimbo to keep them focused. Even if it is only by a little bit...we are going to need every little bit.

If you noticed, when FSU destroyed Clemson, Clemson was ridiculously amped and FSU was just calm and steady, standing there, waiting for Clemson to get their intro over with. Give 'em a taste of their own medicine. Stay calm, let the media say all positive things about them and all negative things about us, and then go out there and get it done.

I don't doubt for a second that our guys hate FSU. Case in point: we came out on absolute fire last year, more than against any other team. The only people that need to blast it out in the media are fans.

You just answered the question right there. How can this game mean more than the game that would decide the conference champion or who gets to play for the championship? If we get blown out this week, and make the conference champ game on a national level that game will not have a ton of relevance.

Better for the ACC to have a half empty stadium in the middle of the east coast while two Florida teams play each other? Texas and OU got it right. In the heyday of the big 12 that was one of the premier games in the College Football Landscape. that game decided who was a true title contender and who was a pretender. That game counted like 2 losses because of the tie breaker.

This re-match actually hurts the conference. The BCS formula will not give extra points for beating the same team twice. Let's say the winner of this game rises to #2 in the BCS in the final week of the season, then loses the champ game eliminating them from the BCSNG, that would look equally dumb.

If you look at this history of this rivalry, the games have been so close. There are many years that if we played twice, I'm sure we would have split. A spilt is bad for the conference. And when we go to a playoff that game will become a defacto elimination game that could prevent 2 ACC teams from making the bracket. Let's say that entering the Champ week the match up is #3 v #5, Instead of the #5 moving up by virtue of other teams losing. #5 loses and drops out of the top 10. Making them a tough sell for the playoff committee.

All some good points. One thing is for sure, it seems like being in the ACC has not done much for our rivalry at all. But we haven't done much lately to make it a huge rivalry either. Even if the two Florida schools of the ACC take over the conference it could end up hurting the conference and that would in-it's-self hurt the rivalry as well, making the matchup not as legit to the nation.

Has nothing to do with smack talk. This is something Harbaugh, the guy who challenged a play against Wake when he was almost at 70 points did to to USC. He talkes about how Carroll was the best coaxh ever, they had the best D ever, and they were gonna easily win the championship. The he beat USC which was like a fourty point favorite at home in 07. Stanford fans were prob smarter than our clowns who look for some kind of social narrative, though.

Let us win a little and it will come right back. You cant talk smack and go get your *** kicked on the weekend. We talked smack back in the day because we knew we would win or they leave the game bloody from the beating we put on them win or lose. Golden is gonna let these guys loose soon, just building the resume. This is still a fragile season and it could fall away. We need one more strong push to finish where we want to and thats in the ACCCG. We have won 2/3 in Tally, and the last time we lost it was 21-14. They get nervous when it gets close up there. BTW i have no worries about this game. If it was Shannon i would. The UF game early in the season was a great challenge to our toughness. And we beat the **** outa them. FSU doesnt want that scrap. No team has challenged them physically, and we will. Clemson tries nice trickery things, thats playing into their hands. If we run for 200-250, we win the game. I think we will.

It was 23-19 our last trip to Tallahassee, not 21-14, but anyway, even our teams from 80s didn't really have that same "hate" for FSU that they did for UF or Notre Dame or even Oklaoma. There was trash talking, but it was never the same hate filled trash talking. I never expected to see a brawl between Miami and FSU either in the 80s or early 90s. Maybe it was because these guys knew each other in high school, heck, knew each other from the time they were 2 or 3 years old, but it was different.

Now, as for me, I hate FSU. I'll fight all those mother****ers right now.

I think all of the recruiting camps, high school all-star camps also have something to do with it. These kids are spending a lot more time together before they get to college and a lot of times stay in touch multiple ways afterwards.
