Serious question - 4th Down Strategy

Should we go for every 4th down north of our own 40? My thinking is that its come to the point that we have no hope of stopping anyone, so everytime we punt it might as well be -3pts/-7pts. I have read in the past there is somes statistical evidence to support just going for any reasonable 4th down.

Thoughts?

I've read that too. But, I'm far too lazy to go find it again. But, seriously, we are almost completely defenseless.

Why not? Especially this season. No one thought we'd hit .500, and we are a win away from nearly locking up the coastal. With so much to gain and so little to lose, why not go aggressive? Couple that with the fact that we have effectively lost our kicking game and I say that north of our 45 is 4 down territory. Who are we gonna stop? No one.

This strategy is equally as extreme as our current philosophy of playing undersized, and inexperienced kids in a defense that is meant to work 2 years from now when they are strong/smart enough to properly execute it. So why not be extreme on offense. ***** it, we have so much to gain and so little to loose with this young bunch of freshman.

defense will be on field a lot less.... we punt, they start on their 10. We go and fail, they start on our 40. only 5 plays to score now instead of 15. defense gets more rest, our offense gets more pt... this is the way to go...

plus our defensive stats will be better....

Never, ever did I think I could remotely agree with something like this for a U defense. However, the logic could be sound. I might push the mark to over midfield ...

I'd go for it.. we'd only need to average 2.5 yard per play for this to work..... might not help with Wieclaw's confidence though if we're on the 20 and we go for it on 4th and 2.

Yes and that 4th and 5 that Golden elected to kick the FG instead of going for it is what did it for me.
With this defense we need to score TD's not FG's. Especially when your FG kicker is missing at a high rate.

Yes - I too was surprised Golden elected to not go for 4th down against ND. No problem with it though - Golden has proven many times over that he's not afraid to roll the dice.
He doesn't coach scared.

I posted this earlier in the week, as crazy as it sounds it will limit the time the D is on the field. There won't be many 12 play 80 yd drives and it gives the strength of our team one more play to pick up a first down.
