So I decided to watch this thing again. Not so much the second half but the first. A couple of things that stood out.
1. Markel Bell had probably his best game of his career. Never really got pressured and his run blocking was superb. Multiple times he was able to get to the second level and get a very good seal block. Early in the first when Fletcher stumbled Bell created a wall that gave him a road to the end zone. Great job by him. While it’s assumed Rivers will take his spot back, having Bell as a good LT gives the flexibility to bump Rivers inside if something happens to one of our G.
2. The officiating was terrible. Cals first TD drive they had a 3rd and 7 around their own 15. We ran a stunt and Mesidor twisted to the outside beating the LT. The LT reached out and grabbed Mesidor around the waist slowing him enough to keep him from getting the pressure which Mendoza completed to move the sticks. Should have been 3rd and 17 with their backs to the end zone. Official was looking right at it, no idea why it wasn’t called.
3. Fletcher and Martinez need to run out of the pistol or with Cam under center. Both had great success early that for some reason Dawson got away from.
4. While we do our fair share of dumb **** the targeting of players by officials needs to stop. I counted at least 6X a Cal player shoving a Miami player after the whistle in full view of an official. With about 12 minutes left in the second we ran an outside run to Fletcher. There were 3 PFs or UCs on that play alone. Their MLB Ulave tackles Fletcher and gets up, takes Fletchers towel and throws it about 4 yards away (UC). During the play Restrepo was blocking and got his helmet pushed up over his head by and illegal hands to the face (PF). J George who was blocking a guy ended up with his back to the DBs as he was standing over the top of the pile. After the whistle the DB gives him a two hand shove to the back knocking him into the pile (UC 2). Really terrible job of officiating. Literally the next play Cam rolls left and finds Horton for the first down who was in a squat/kneel past the sticks. The DB who had contact has Horton around the neck, rolls him over his body gets to a standing position shoves him on the back then knees him as he’s trying to get back to his feet. Nothing said to the Cal defender.
5. Our LBs are like our safeties the last 2 years. They bite seemingly on every fake. I don’t know if that’s conditioned since we spend so much time blitzing them or what. But it needs to be fixed.
6. Would love to see a freshman WR step up and take reps from Brown. His bobble stalled the drive early on the screen. j George had the block and Brown would have had a lane for the first down. Instead he worked laterally trying to bring the pass in and it got wrecked. Had another drop if I remember correctly.
Bunch of other stuff too but I’m tired of typing.
