Where are you at in Sota? I'm in Bloomington. Don't ever really post but been on the site and others for a lot of years. Die hard fan.... Good to see another fan here. Pretty rare - but I bumped into a few fans a couple of weeks ago too at Thunder Valley in Savage.

Not making a claim that MN football is even close to the south - but Cretin is the a school that pretty consistently puts out a few D1 players every year.... Not only Seantrel - but Mauer was the top football prospect in the country his Sr. year but chose baseball, Weinke was up there too, Michael Floyd from Notre Dame - all Cretin Derham kids.

Can someone explain the logic of espn when it comes to high school football? They forget that the high school national football championship happened a week ago and then they don't broadcast STA vs John Curtis...two top ten teams, meanwhile they broadcast this ****

Didn't BRad Edwards go there? I think he played both center and QB his senior year...straight balla but elected to marry some girl and then hunt bears for a living

I read in the paper today that ESPN (main channel only) figures in its target audience to broadcast 25-30 high school games. It said that a good majority of the games were in FL and the south. It also said that ESPN2 and ESPNU get many more then the main channel.

I played at Cretin with Mauer back in the late 90s / early 00s. This years team is the worst team they've had since the mid 80s. And, of course, this is the year they're put on national tv. I believe this is only the 4th time in 25 years that Cretin has lost 2 regular season games. However, they've done it this year in 3 games. Further, they've made 23 straight section finals and are 21-2 in those games (ie 21 state tournaments since 1990). This might be the first year they don't make the section finals.

Football alumni:
- Steve Walsh
- his brother Chris who came to Miami but left program
- Chris Weinke
- Steve and Tim Rosga
- Matt Birk
- Ryan Harris
- Michael Floyd
- bunch of other really good ones who were good college players but didn't make it in the pros
- Mauer; who could've been the best of all of them. He dislocated more than his fair share of fingers in practice with his throws. Guy was #1 recruit and signed with FSU.

If I werent a Canes fan, I would have only heard of two of the names on that list. lol

I watched a few series of that game. Two words came to mind "Bore" and "Ring." :)

Ah man, you are forgetting the best of the best--Steve Walsh. 1 NC, cheated out of another. 1st pick in NFL supplemental draft by Dallas.

Gino Toretta might have gone there too.

Gino was from Cali. Pinole or something.

You're thinking of Steve Walsh.

Yes, Steve Walsh was from Cretin-Durham, as was his brother, I believe. His brother Chris was a nationally-ranked prospect coming out, but when he got to UM he had a real problem with mechanics that nobody could correct. He transferred out, maybe back to U-Minn, and disappeared from football as far as I know. There have been a few other kids who were highly-ranked national recruits from that school, I believe. If the teams overall are not that athletic, the program might be one of those that produces a few outstanding prospects from an otherwise ordinary program. I doubt that there are many schools anywhere that have the wall-to-wall talent that I saw, for example, at BTW during the two games that were streamed. There was no comparison between the number 7 team from Georgia and Booker T. That Norcross Georgia team was totally dismantled by a south Florida team. Likewise, I would suspect that Cretin-Durham probably produces very ordinary football players except for a few exceptions.

Carl McCullough was another that I was trying to think of. He was one of the highest rated athletes the year he came out, played at Wisconsin, started part of the time, and went undrafted. Looking at the list on wikipedia, you can see they tend to produce a lot of OLs, which makes sense. As a Catholic school, they probably don't get a ton of inner city guys with speed. They get big white guys. I know there are exceptions around the country, but as a general rule, that's probably the way it is.

And no, I don't think Brad went there, or DBC, or Paranos. They all went to Rutgers, I think. After some high school somewhere, probably New Jersey.
