After missing part of his freshman season to knee injury, Samson Okunlola has been working with both the first and second-team at right tackle and left guard. He met with reporters to discuss his progress:

On his mindset so far in camp: Every day I'm looking to get better. Because I'm really getting better, my focus is not on starting or nothing like that. My focus is to get better today and better tomorrow and better the next day.

On the depth in the room: We’ve definitely...

Was his development due to the injury setback or coaching/talent faced in high school?
He’s linked to Mauigoa for obvious reasons but they couldn’t have been more different coming in

Mauigoa was physically ready to go from Day 1. Samson looked like he needed a lot of S&C and then he got hurt which just made that process slower

Per 247 article, Samson appears to be a better fit at tackle and slides in at RT if Mauigoa moves to LG. With Mauigoa at RT, McCoy is the leader at LG.
Makes perfect sense. Mauigoa at LG is a no brainer but only if someone could step up at RT

Samson looked like a prototype tackle when he got here just needed to spend a ton of time in the weight room

If he’s a stud at tackle, Francis is def physical enough to play Guard and he could probably be an all pro guard down the line
Not even just physical. I think I brought this up in the winter but watching highlights Cohens athleticism was very underrated and led to some huge plays

Mauigoa is a freak athlete and could be an all American guard. Only question would be is he more valuable at tackle. If he played guard this year I would expect him to be a tackle again next year and probably be an all American there too

I've been advocating for this for a while. I'm moving Francis to LG and then let McCoy, Samson, and Bell battle out at RT.
I agree that this is probably the best lineup on paper but Francis has to be on board otherwise you risk losing him for next year. I am sure he would be a team player and move to guard but I cant imagine its not his preference to play tackle. Financially, its a no brainer.

With free transfers and NIL, there are a lot of things to consider. The benefit to moving him inside has to be clear and substantial. He has already shown he can play tackle and teams would come at him HARD this offseason and sell that opportunity if we put him at guard

Tackle is more important than Guard. And Why would Mauigoa want to move?

Generally not the best plan to move your freshman all American OT to Guard. Id move Rivers before Mauigoa personally.
Rivers is way better at tackle than francis is tho, they protected francis alot last year and rivers was by far our best tackle so its a no brainer on who should move of that is even a real possibility

This is kinda crazy tbh

You really think these guys aren’t haven’t these conversations?

And if we moved him to guard for this year, he would likely go back to tackle next year. These aren’t South Florida wide receivers diva mentality

All hypothetical anyway

Can we experiment with the OL and the LG/RT combinations *after* the Gator game and before the VT game? If Mauigoa is your best RT going into the Gator game, then he should stay there next to Cooper. I'd rather hide the relatively weaker link inside and next to Rivers. You feel the need to give Okunlola and Bell chances to prove their value at RT? There's FAMU, Ball State, and USF.

If you’re moving Mauigoa to guard you better know for 100 percent fact the guy kicking out is as good because tackle is not the position to be playing around with. If you have two good returning tackles you’re in a good spot. To mess with that is crazy unless you really trust the new guy.
