THE BASICS
_ Miami is 8-0 against Duke since joining the ACC (33-36 against everyone else in conference play).
_ Miami has allowed 500 or more yards in its last two ACC games. It's the first time since joining the league that the Hurricanes allowed at least 500 in consecutive league matchups.
_ Going back to last season, Miami has allowed at least 300 yards passing in six of its last seven ACC games.
_ Virginia Tech was the first team to not turn the ball over at least once against Miami this season.
_ Miami has had only four penalties for 15 yards in the last two weeks. The 'Canes are 0-2 in those games. Go figure.
_ For the second straight week, Miami set a season-low in time of possession. The Hurricanes had the ball for 20 minutes, 30 seconds against Virginia Tech, 57 seconds fewer than they had it against Florida State.
_ The last time Miami had the ball less in a game was Nov. 1, 1997 in a 42-10 win over Arkansas State (20:17). (Bonus fun fact about that Arkansas State game: Eventual Dolphins QB Cleo Lemon was the Indians' starter that day.)
_ Miami is now 9-29 when scoring no more than 24 points in ACC games. The 'Canes are 32-7 when scoring more than 24 in league games.
RANKINGS WATCH
Miami was ranked No. 7 in the AP Top 25 two weeks ago. No Miami team since 1967 has been ranked No. 7 or higher and then fallen out of the rankings entirely later that season.
Here's Miami's biggest two-week drops (before the poll of today, Nov. 10) in the last 30 years of AP polling:
_ 19 (from 6 to 25), 1996
_ 14 (from 4 to 18), 2004.
_ 12 (from 2 to 14), 2003.
_ 11 (from 5 to 16), 1984.
_ 10 (from 8 to 18), 1999.
_ 10 (from 9 to 19), 1999.
_ 10 (from 12 to 22), 1996.
_ 10 (from 4 to 14), 1984.
MORRIS MOVES UP
Even though they came in a loss, Miami QB Stephen Morris had the two longest passes of his career against ACC opponents on Saturday night, with the 81-yarder to Stacy Coley followed by the 84-yarder to Allen Hurns.
Morris became the first quarterback from an FBS school with two completions of 80 yards or more in the same game since Ryan Mallett did it for Arkansas against LSU in 2010.
He's also the first ACC quarterback since at least 1995 to have two completions of 80 yards in the same game. And he now has three of the five longest completions by any Miami quarterback in an ACC game.
Here's the Top 10 completions by Miami quarterbacks in ACC games:
97 yards -- Kyle Wright to Darnell Jenkins, Oct. 7, 2007
84 yards -- Kirby Freeman to Darnell Jenkins, Nov. 3, 2007
84 yards -- Stephen Morris to Allen Hurns, Nov. 9, 2013
81 yards -- Stephen Morris to Stacy Coley, Nov. 9, 2013
79 yards -- Stephen Morris to Leonard Hankerson, Nov. 13, 2010
77 yards -- Kirby Freeman to Lance Leggett, Nov. 18, 2006
77 yards -- Jacory Harris to Travis Benjamin, Oct. 8, 2011
76 yards -- Kyle Wright to Lance Leggett, Nov. 12, 2005
76 yards -- Stephen Morris to Rashawn Scott, Sept. 29, 2012
72 yards -- Stephen Morris to Mike James, Nov. 24, 2012
DEFENSE LEAKING
After seven games, Miami ranked 18th nationally in yards allowed per game (342.3). The last two weeks have changed that mightily; The 'Canes rank 111th in yardage defense in that span, and that has natually sent Miami plummeting in the national rankings.
The Hurricanes are now 54th nationally in yards per game, 384.7.
And third downs have been a major issue in the last three weeks.
27 for 45 -- that's the success rate that Wake Forest, Florida State and Virginia Tech have had on third downs against Miami.
26 for 92 -- that's the success rate of the Hurricanes' first six opponents, combined.
THIRD AND LONG, ER, WRONG
Not only are the Hurricanes not getting off the field on third down, they gave up two home runs against Virginia Tech in that situation.
Last year, opponents had third-and-11-or-longer 27 times against Miami. They got no touchdowns on those plays.
Last night, Virginia Tech had third-and-11-or-longer three times against Miami. The Hokies got two touchdowns on those plays.
SHIFTING OF POWER
For a team that started 7-0, it would stand to reason that Miami would have been leading games more often than not this season.
That's not quite the case.
Miami has run 246 plays when leading this season. That's compared to 258 plays now when trailing.
HURNS NUMBERS
Miami WR Allen Hurns never had a 100-yard game coming into this season. He now has three in 2013, including a career-high 142-yard effort in the loss to Virginia Tech.
Hurns faced Virginia Tech three times in his college career. He had a touchdown catch in all three of those games.
Hurns is nearing some milestones. He's four catches shy of 100 as a Hurricane, and 39 yards shy of reaching the 1,500 mark in that department.
TOUGH NIGHT
Miami RB Dallas Crawford had a career-long 35-yard carry against Virginia Tech.
His other 9 carries on the night? They netted two yards.
Here's a look at how many yards his carries got, in order, against the Hokies: 1, -3, 2, -4, 2, -5, 3, 35, 3, 3.
He did get his 10th rushing TD of the season, making him the 7th Miami RB in the last 20 years to reach that plateau.
HALF BAD
Whatever went on in the first half usually tells the story in Miami games, at least since Al Golden took over as coach before the 2011 season.
When Miami is winning or tied at the break, it has won 17 of 18 games under Golden.
When Miami is losing at the break, as it was against Virginia Tech, it has lost 12 of 15 times.
