And here it is, even after a bye week, my weekly notes-and-stats roll on Miami football... Canes (2-0) play Savannah State (1-2) on Saturday night.

_ Miami looking for first 3-0 start since 2004.
_ Miami looking for first five-game winning streak since 2008.
_ Miami QB Stephen Morris needs 39 yards to pass Jim Kelly (5,228) for 10th on Miami's all-time list.
_ More Morris: Needs 180 yards to pass Steve Walsh (5,369) for ninth on the same list.
_ Even more Morris: Needs 27 completions to pass Brock Berlin (406) for 10th on Miami's all-time list in that department.
_ At 2-0, Miami is one of 35 still-unbeaten teams at the FBS level.
_ Miami's Al Golden started 10-28 as a head coach. He's 32-17 since, and is three games away from getting his career mark back to .500 for the first time since, well, he was 0-0 when beginning at Temple.
_ Miami is one of only 12 teams so far to beat an opponent ranked in the Top 25.
_ Miami ranks 11th nationally in points allowed per game (11.0). Last year: Canes were 82nd (30.5 points per game).
_ OK, some bad news: Miami is tied with winless USF for the fourth-lowest third-down percentage in America (20.0, 5 for 25).
_ With 245 yards, Duke Johnson is fourth in the ACC in rushing. (The three ahead of him have all played three games, to Duke's two.)
_ Among teams that have played only two games, only Northern Illinois (nine) has gotten more QB sacks than Miami (seven).
_ Hurricanes punter Pat O'Donnell (47.6 yards per punt) ranks fourth nationally in average distance. Alas, he only ranks second among punters from Miami: Zac Murphy (Miami-Ohio) leads the nation at 48.8 yards per punt.
_ Savannah State beat Division II's Fort Valley State 27-20 last night. Savannah State hasn't won two straight games since 2008.
_ Savannah State got a beyond-awful 17 yards on 20 rushing attempts last night -- and its season average per carry ACTUALLY IMPROVED. Before last night, Savannah State was averaging 0.813 yards per carry this season. Now, that's all the way up to 0.825 yards per carry this season.
_ Savannah State coach Earnest Wilson has a few indirect ties to Miami. He was a graduate assistant for Joe Paterno at Penn State (Al Golden's alma mater). He was an assistant at Maine (where current Miami athletic director Blake James once worked). He played at Texas Tech (where former Miami AD Kirby Hocutt now works).

Miami looking for first 3-0 start since 2004. - Oh how the mighty have fallen. So ****** glad we beat UF.

_ Even more Morris: Needs 27 completions to pass Brock Berlin (406) for 10th on Miami's all-time list in that department. - I had a "canes fan" tell me yesterday we need to get rid of Golden and Morris and let Coley be our head coach. I said "Morris is the best QB we have had here since Berlin, maybe Dorsey". His answer to that was Morris is an idiot and doesnt put up numbers. I let Tim Reynolds make my point. He can end up high on the Canes all times lists.

_ OK, some bad news: Miami is tied with winless USF for the fourth-lowest third-down percentage in America (20.0, 5 for 25). - Thats terrible.

I have been following the program since 1982 when I started at Miami and Savannah St is the worst team miami has ever played since then. I don't mind playing a 1AA team but not one this bad. I am embarrassed that we are playing them.

I think I read somewhere that Memphis was originally scheduled but it feel through last year if I'm not mistaken. Savannah St might have been the only viable option.

im not embarassed that we are playing them but I do feel bad for the players on that team that are going to get exploited over and over and over and over.
