Thanks OG. Interesting Read. Yes he is a Nole, and born and bred to hate us, but he made some good points.
Most of us would agree Shannon left the cupboard pretty bare for Golden. And yes, we have horrible facilities and a smaller hardcore base as compared to elite state schools.
But those are the same problems coaches as recently as Butch and his proxy Coker(the coker with butch's players) had. That worked out pretty well. Butch also faced a FAR more severe sanction period. What is the difference?
Golden-to his credit- does one thing very well: recruiting. If a program can consistently pull top 10-15 classes and not be a top 25 team, that coach is not developing his talent, or he is such a bad scheme and gameday guy, that he is ruining his recruiting and development successes.
Either way, The Knights Of the Golden Table have gotten their wish. Golden will get his 4th year. Take a quick look at 2014 to realize some of the cupcakes we played this year will be replaced with a real schedule.
If we go 7-5, do you still "stay the course" and "trust the process". Most of you wont. So stop attacking those who arrived at the same conclusion you will reach earlier than you did.
Good and lucid post! I fully concur.
From the article ...
Fifth, Miami's athletic director did not hire Golden. If Golden is 22-14 after three years, ticket sales are predictably awful, and Miami's program is even more distant from its great past, think the AD will stick his neck out for Golden, who he did not hire?
He's 22-15 with only one win over any team that finished the season better than 7-6. Hardly inspiring.
Having said that, he has been saddled with what someone referred to as a Crapathon. As a benefit of the doubt he deserves a season, maybe two, to recruit w/o being strapped by that. But having said that, his gameday coaching, particularly that of his choice of DC, sucks rhinoceros balls. So it's hard to envision how better talent will help, even if he assembles top-10 talent, what, we'll finish in the top 25 somewhere?
There's no reason to hope that he'll hit par with the talent he assembles, much less overachieve with it.
Also from the piece ...
Yes, Golden may be able to bring some quality coaches with him from Temple, but the reality is that most of them are not likely to be stars.
The single biggest one that he brought with him is laughable in the position in hindsight. I guess Golden likes a good laugh all season long.
Who knows, maybe D'off has some dirt on his best buddy. LOL
It sucks tho as a fan when you have to hope to gather A++ talent just to post a B+ season.
And you're right about the schedule, this year was about as easy as it's ever going to be. Not too many seasons when UF is that bad, not that we'll be playing them regularly or anything, but they won't be replaced by the Savannah States of the world either. The ACC blew chuncks this season overall.
