Popo was on the Sebastian Lane show tonight. First interview since he committed. Some highlights

  1. Mario was recruiting him while at Oregon. Said there was no way he was going all the way out to Oregon, but he almost considered it solely because of Mario. When he came to Miami, it was a no-brainer decision.
  2. Popo says he tests each coach with questions to see how real they are. Mario passed the test. He didn't say, but reading between the lines, I think Manny flunked it (see point 4 below)
  3. He spent 35 minutes talking with Ed Reed during his visit about the 2001 Canes and their mindset (which he says matches his mindset).
  4. Says Charlie Strong is both a tremendous coach and recruiter. His knowledge and insights light years beyond Patke (and by inference Manny).
  5. He explains how he got the nickname Popo
  6. He explains the proper pronunciation of his name. As most of us suspected, the Spanish pronunciation ("ahgeereh" with the "r" being rolled) is correct. Its definitely not pronounced ("agwire") like Mark Aguirre is mispronounced. He says the folk up in GA just can't pronounce it right so he stopped trying to get them to say it correctly.
  7. He's got two younger brothers starting with him on varsity and says their both dogs!
  8. He says when he committed, he told everyone he's bringing folk with him. He says be on the lookout for some major commits soon

Younger brother is a Noles fan, we've got some work to do if he's a legit prospect. Anyone familiar with either younger brother?

This is in line with Mario's second recruiting wave comment.

Thanks. Ironically enough, Mark Aguirre's name should be pronounced the same as Popo but I digress.

Not after what they will do this season....

Yeah, the correct pronunciation is essentially "ahgeereh" with the "r" being rolled (though I'm half Puerto Rican and have never been able to roll my "r"s!). Not "agwire" like most pronounce it.
¡Ay bendito!

I updated the OP with the correct phonetics

Well he is certainly confident. And he needs this, he doesn’t just really want it. He has lots of siblings for whom he seems to derive lots of motivation to succeed. He’s a dog and feels he must be to win and he wants to win at everything.
So is he;
a. The talent who can back up the talk like from the old days when we had guys who just knew they worked harder and were better than the competition, or
b. A guy who doesn’t understand what he’s talking about and is writing checks with his mouth that his *** can’t cash?

Because I don’t see how he can be both. I’m all for the confidence but with it comes expectations. Now his retort would be that he has higher expectaitons of himself than anyone. Which if true is precisely who a school wants to recruit.
