UM ADDS SCORER

Rashad Muhammad, a 6-6 shooting guard, is transferring from San Jose State to Miami, ESPN's Jeff Goodman reported tonight, quoting his brother, Minnesota Timberwolves small forward Shabazz Muhammad.

Rashad Muhammad averaged 13.2 points as a freshman in 2013-14 and 13.9 points last season, when he shot 38.1 percent from the field and 36 percent on threes (59 for 164). He also averaged 3.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists last season.

He was the leading scorer last season on a San Jose State team that went 2-28 and winless against Division 1 teams.

Muhammad would have to sit out next season under NCAA transfer rules.

The San Jose Mercury News reported in May that he could have had grounds to appeal to the NCAA to be eligible immediately at another school if San Jose State remained under a postseason ban for poor APR scores. But the school learned, after he transferred, that its APR scores had risen and it's no longer ineligible for postseason play.

With Sheldon McClellan entering his senior season, Muhammad is in position to compete for UM's starting shooting guard job in 2016-17. He has two years of eligibility left.

He also helps replace DeAndre Burnett, who transferred to Mississippi because he was concerned he wouldn't get enough playing time or enough shots at UM.

While Shabazz Muhammad was one of the nation's most coveted players out of high school before signing with UCLA, Rashad was lightly recruited. He chose San Jose State over offers from Wyoming and Utah State.

This time around, he picked UM over DePaul and San Francisco.
