As the days dwindle before the start of fall football practice Monday, the Orlando Sentinel presents its rankings of the top quarterbacks in Central Florida. The rankings are based on past performance, success and the player's importance to his team, not on recruiters' evaluations.

1. Damon Haecker, Lake Brantley, senior

The Auburn baseball commit is not a prototypical passing quarterback but is effective running the Patriots' triple-option offense. He rushed for 1,186 yards and 10 touchdowns and threw for six more scores in 2011, leading Lake Brantley to its first 10-0 regular season. "He could be the best quarterback we've had,'' coach George Clayton said. "He's tough as nails, has all the intangibles and is a winner.''

2. Asiantii Woulard, Winter Park, senior

Coming off MVP honors at the Elite 11 camp, Woulard's recruiting stock should skyrocket. The USF commit (6 feet 4, 205 pounds) showed flashes of brilliance last year, throwing for more than 1,500 yards with 15 touchdowns. Woulard must prove he can translate those skills into victories. "He's got the strongest arm I've ever seen,'' coach Tim Shifflet said. "His upside and physical abilities are through the roof.''

3. Levar Robinson, Evans, senior

The Trojans' coaching staff credits Robinson (6-2, 190) with leading the program back to respectability in 2011. He completed 57 percent of his passes for 2,182 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior and added three more scores and 465 rushing yards. Robinson has offers from Memphis and Colorado State. "He's the whole package,'' coach Chip Gierke said. "He fits exactly what we want.''

4. Jason Driskel, Hagerty, junior

While not the same level of athlete as his brother, Jeff (a sophomore at Florida), he may be a more accurate passer. "He's able to make the right throws, and he's very dangerous outside of the pocket," coach Nate Gierke said. Driskel threw for more than 1,100 yards and 13 touchdowns as a sophomore.

5. JB Woodman, Edgewater, senior

In two seasons as the Eagles' starter, Woodman has thrown for nearly 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns. He threw 17 interceptions in 2010 but was picked off only five times on 225 attempts last season. Woodman (6-3, 190) boasts a strong arm and has the build to play college football. He has committed to play baseball at Mississippi.

6. Alton Meeks, Dr. Phillips, senior

The Panthers' need for a quarterback was filled this summer when Meeks transferred from Boone. In two previous seasons with the Braves, Meeks (6-2, 225) threw for more than 2,200 yards and 24 touchdowns. The state champion wrestler is a threat in goal-line situations and is tough to bring down. Meeks rejected offers from major colleges such as FSU to play linebacker and committed to Cincinnati to play quarterback.

7. Tucker Israel, Lake Nona, sophomore

As a freshman in the Lions' pass-happy offense, Israel broke area single-season passing records by throwing for 2,924 yards and 30 touchdowns. If Lake Nona continues to throw the ball at that pace, all of Central Florida's area career passing records are in jeopardy.

8. Zack Darlington, Apopka, junior

The son of coach Rick Darlington enters his third year leading the Blue Darters' offense and will be relied upon much more this year to make plays. Darlington completed 14 of 16 passes for 146 yards and three touchdowns in a 22-7 spring-game victory against Daytona Beach Seabreeze.

9. Undra Mitchem, Leesburg, Senior

As a sophomore, Mitchem was a key player on Leesburg's state championship basketball team. His success on the court may overshadow his football ability, but the senior is a top-notch quarterback. In two seasons as the starter, he has thrown for more than 3,000 yards and 34 touchdowns.

10. Chris Davis, Oviedo, senior

The Lions had a void at quarterback last season and turned to Davis. Although inexperienced, Davis led a young team to seven victories and a playoff berth. He made key plays in important games and accounted for nearly 1,300 yards and 12 TDs.
