1. We had two plays that should have been called safeties stolen from us (clemson and fsu). both safeties would have changed the course of the game. [sentence edited for clarification].

2. jacolby george is our most talented receiver. speed, route running, hands, separation, acceleration. he has all the gifts to be an elite receiver.

3. shannon dawson's run play calling needs dramatic improvement. i cannot tell you how many times he called runs straight up the middle back to back, with meager results. lashlee had the same issues.

4. notwithstanding the OL size, they don't get as much push as i thought they would. pass protection is elite.

5. if is see another predicable WR bubble screen a la Patrick Nix, i am going to vomit, but only after beating Dawson with a whip.

6. lance guidry's pressure schemes are elite. he disguises them well and they are varied, un predictable.

7. our two starting safeties were MEH, to say the least. good open field tackling, interceptions and pass break ups. just as many blown and stupid plays, not just the georgia tech disaster

8. lots of missed run fits at linebacker.

9. RT mauigoa's start had issues, to be expected. he got a ton better as the year progressed.

10. emory williams is a tough decent QB. missed a ton of throws because the ball slipped out of his hands.

Agree with all. Especially #1 through #7

Offensive coaching is my biggest fear this year by far. I don't know for sure if it's just that Dawson isn't that good or if Mario really did meddle last year (or both).....but the coaching on that side of the ball needs to drastically improve.

I must admit that I'm in this boat as well. As excited as I get over the talent on offense, I still have that worry over coaching in my gut.

Bad QB play and Turnovers had a lot to do with many of the losses in 2023:

Games where the QB play was way below average and average QB play would have won the game
GT---- 3 interceptions
NcSt---3 Interceptions
FSU---33% completion rate, 1 interception, and only 204 passing yards on 30 attempts

Turnover margin could not be overcome
UNC----4 turnovers vs zero for UNC
Rutgers---1 Interception plus a blocked punt for a TD vs zero turnovers for Rutgers

Good points.

Run push wasn't always there. In passing situations most teams dropped eight so that helped.

Maybe on George

The safety play took a dip last year.

Screens were ridiculous. So many porsters complained in the game threads wanting a screen. But it's a huge chunk of the office. Maybe worse than Pat Nix in that regard.

And the spring game didn't make me think this year will be better. Are offense is basically run up the middle. Throw a WR a screen. Then let X get the next 8 yards for first down.

This game will be extremely close and I do not think the outcome will effect the season for either team.

Week one games are a notoriously bad predictor for future outcomes. A mediocre UF team beat a very good Utah team two years ago in the swamp. The subsequent seasons for each team could not have been more different.

I would love to believe that the outcome for 8.31 aligns with what anyone with an iota of football IQ sees on paper. However, Miami (and Mario) have not been at or above the sum of their parts for two decades. Being “clearly better” than UF at multiple critical positions is not enough for a win to be near certain. There are scenarios where Mertz craps the bed and the second half showcases a Tua-like moment where DJ Lagway gets the nod and our DBs get absolutely roasted alive for two quarters while Mario turtles like a teenage mutant.

I trust 1/3 of the scheme and personnel decision makers in this regime. Somehow yall say, “but this player did X bad thing that cost us a game or we would’ve won 8, 9, 10 games”, while mostly absolving the staff and HC leading them. So with all the variables at play, virtually no outcome on 8.31 would shock me. Miami is without a doubt the best team on paper, the roster is loaded. But that has yet to be a reliable predictor for the team’s success since the early 2000s.

Forgot which opponent fan pulled up play breakdown before our game late in year but when charting the plays our offense was mainly duo run game with screens, hitches/comebacks and go routes..

Teams went drop eight on us and we had no answer..

1. 100
2. Brown has something to say about that now. WRs are going to be fun to watch!
3. Haven't rewatched those games in a while but I "believe" a lot of those were TVD checking down. I do not expect Ward to run the RPO or call checkdowns that are so basic.
4. Agree. I expect 2024 OL to be much better than 2023 OL.
5. That was Shannon trying to increase TVD's confidence again. Won't need to do that with Ward. Though I wouldn't totally do away with bubbles. We have some guys with wheels that can turn them into TDs.
6. 100
7. 100 (and 2022 was even worse)
8. 100. I firmly believe that goes away now that Kiko has had a year under Dawson and that LB group around him is 10x the talent we had last year.
9. Yep, He was a legit Freshman AA, but that didn't make him great, only good enough. He'll take a dramatic step forward this year IMO.
10. Agree. Kid should never have been asked to do what he did. But he'll be much better for it going forward.

Great stuff

LBs got better as season progressed
X was our most talented WR last year and S Brown will be for the upcoming season
Dawson was pretty decent at the beginning of the season then not. Hope we get a consistent better version of him this year

The screen game was particularly annoying because we were running screens with the wrong guys

I think Dawson can be a good OC, I’m not really sure why people have such concrete opinions of what he’s capable of but I digress, I thought there were some really questionable choices with personnel

I also absolutely hated our running back rotation. Never gave anyone a chance to get in a rhythm this over protection of running backs annoys me

I’m happy to see Martinez being here so there’s no BS about who the man is
