For those that may remember. I though I recalled some discussion last year, that Kaaya was told, or he and family had been assured he would either be redshirted, or that he wouldn't be thrown into the fire. Something like that.

Ive brought it up several times, but no one seems to recall or have an answer.

It could have been a rumor, but I do seem to recall some discussion that Coley had assured his mom that we were going to RS him and bring him along when he was ready, and that its what Kaaya and his family wanted.

Does anyone recall this at all?

Am just curious if this was legit, or just a rumor. And if it was legit, if anything has changed. Obviously he is greatly exceeding expectations right now, and with the RW injury, the calculus from last year when he was recruited has changed. There is no question that based on this camp, he would be starting the season now lower than #2 on the roster.

I just have not read anything so far, indicating that Kaaya has expressed a desire to be the #1 guy to start the season. We all assume it, but Ive had this whole "Red Shirt promise" thing in the back of my mind all along, and wondering if maybe he doesn't want to have to either 1. Play this season, or 2. Even if he does, have to start, and not right out of the gate.

This is a genuine question. For anyone that may remember. Because it could be significant if it was a promise made, and he still feels strongly about it.

i do not recall that story and i have been paying a lot of attention to this kid since just before he committed. but my memory isn't so good anymore.

I actually remember it the other way, him saying he isn't coming to redshirt and he was ready to compete. I remember being worried because I still had some hope for Olsen.

Not sure though.

Kaaya seems far more mature than Olsen was as a true freshman, so it makes sense that Olsen's familly wanted him to redshirt and grow up.

This seems highly unlikely. QB making demands and essentially negotiating terms with the HC and OC.

I dont see that as unlikely or unusual at all. You hear about things like this all the time. Coaches making assurances to parents of highly ranked recruits. Usually its something like "they assured me and my parents that I don't have to Red Shirt" etc... but in a situation like this, I could also see it going the other way, where the parents would be concerned about the kid being rushed too soon, and being allowed to take his time to develop.

In any case, sounds like it was probably just a rumor. I was just worried that maybe the kid really wanted to RS this year, and that all this is for nothing.

Kaaya's fathers preference was that if he is/was only going to play a handful of snaps this season, would have been to redshirt, absolutely

But the Ryan Williams injury changed everything in terms of the QB depth chart and how Brad was looked upon in terms of expectations

They were in this for the long haul, regardless, they never had a 3 year plan to the NFL or anything like that

Is it at all possible that the dude grew up a bit? And oh something about an ACL and a waterpipe addict changed the game a bit?
