question about redshirts

so do the coaches have to report to NCAA that certain players are redshirting or can they do this retroactively.

for example, there is a bunch of freshman who have yet to play.

Do we have to declare their redshirts now so that they will be ineligible to play rest of the year, or can we just say those players redshirted after the season's done?

You don't get a RS until the season is over. They don't have to declare. Coaches are still free to burn shirts.
