During the BC Game when Miami had 1st and Goal, Clements was in as the running back..

Is he going to be our short yardage back?

I figured James because of his running style would be better our Goal Line Back.

Pretty clear that we're using him that way. I think our personnel groupings are a little obvious, but I'm going to see how it plays out before I make a long post about it.

James is not suited to be a short yardage back because he has sub-par burst. For as big as he may be, his YAC is not what it should be.

It will sound like hyperbole, but I believe Duke Johnson is our best short yardage back right now, and I suspect that's what we'll see toward the end of the season.

^ Duke is flat out our best RB right now

I just don't think he is physically ready to carry the load in this offense. It's going to cause our personnel to be a little obvious because James and Clements have to be worked into the offense and they are very situational backs IMO.

I'd rather see Clements more than James as he is a little more skilled.

James, good kid, but he flat out stinks. Dude is running in cement

Yea clements did that at the end of the year. James lack of vision is the reason I guess.

I am sure you mean more than in just short field situations, but if Clements always comes in in short field situations, I dont think that is a big deal from a tipping our hand point of view as it's not like the defense doesn't realize it's a short field. Now if he only comes in when we are running, or we always run the same direction with him, then that is another issue (which is what I am guessing you are referring to).

No, I mean in general and inclusive, especially, of which TEs.

Lu, what do you feel as James being used in more situations as a FB?

How is his blocking?

Not saying he shouldn't be given carries because I think he needs carries but being used as a FB with him running swing routes and wheels that would put him up against a LB?

You mean like every time Walford and Dye are split wide...? :p

I think it makes perfect sense. I'd prefer it. When he came here, I compared his role to Larry Centers in the NFL. I still think that's his best role.

He should be closer to Najeh Davenport in 2000. Instead, his role right now indicates James Jackson in 2000. He's a good guy and a good teammate, but he is not dynamic enough to do what we need from a 12-18 carry/game RB.

Exactly, I would actually prefer Clements get more carries than James.

Get James the ball in FB Screens, and those quick FB pops that we saw during the BC Game ( I think). He's a great teammate and loves the U and deserves to be play 100%, but not that 15 carry a game RB we need.

The problem with Clements right now is that he shows ZERO vision. He hits the hole like a **** rocket, but a rocket with no guidance system. So he's great on short yardage when we just need to punch it in a few feet.

I'm shocked with as strong as MJ is in the weight room, and as big as he is, that he was going down so easily Saturday.

Seemed like last year he was breaking the first tackle most times. Maybe the fumbles got to him?

OU had a kid like this a few years back, Allen Patrick, he hit the hole like Carl Lewis, and didn't care if there were defenders or O-lineman in the way, just jammed it in, no vision.

I never recall seeing this out of James before, but on Saturday, it seemed that when he sensed or had a little contact, he would just dive/fall forward.

I don't understand the perception of James. I guess its because he called himself smash last year. He's never been that type of runner.

Tries to run like a speed back in an undersized FB body with terrible speed. He can be useful running between the tackles but he can't even get to the hole on those outside runs

I want to make a point to bring up what Lu said.

Duke is without a doubt our best short yardage runner. It took all of one run to figure that out. Neither Clements or James run with power and their vision is nowhere near what Dukes is.

Clements is a better option on the goal line and short yardage than James but Duke is a better one than Clements.

And Al **** sure recognized it on that play, he was fired up and gave Duke big props.
