If Miami beats Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl were they going to win the championship?

Well, based on the OU defeat of PSU( who was ranked #1 coming) in the Orange Bowl, Id say yes

As I recall, leading up to the game, that's all anyone could talk about. I believe the theme was "when we beat Tennessee, will we be #1". I know the fans were looking past the Vols. I wonder if the team was. They sure played like it.

Its crazy to think that while we have 5 NC since 1981 we probably should have 7 and maybe 8, all in a 21 year span.

We would have likely been #1 had we beaten Nebraska as well. If you look at it that way, we have lost as many national championship games as we have one. Very impressive that we have had 10 opportunities. Would have had 11 if the system worked fairly. Shows how dominant we have been over the last 30 years.

Yes to Tenn and PSU in 86. Not only that, with the recruiting steamroller that Jimmy created which created the 89 and 91 championships, had he not succumbed to the lure his old teammate dangled in front of him to go to Dallas, he might have won conservatively at least 10 more.

When Iowa lost earlier in the day in the Rose Bowl, and with Penn State going down, it clearly was ours for the taking. Having won in Norman earlier in the season, OU would not have been ranked ahead of us in the polls.

Likely would have been a split. That's the way I remember it and Frank Broyles handicaps it that way in real time if you watch the video of the Miami/Tennessee Sugar Bowl. I posted that game on YouTube about a month ago.

1994 was all Penn State, if we had defeated Nebraska.

The fact we beat OU in Norman that year, I'd say it was virtually certain Miami wins the NC if we could've taken care of business against the Vols.

The '86 Sugar Bowl still ****es me off to this day. We were clearly a better team than Tennessee. Unfortunately, the players were more focused on partying on Bourbon street than winning a football game. Players were showing up at their hotel room at all hours the night before the game.

One of the reasons Jerome Brown took the '87 Fiesta Bowl so seriously is he didn't want the team to lose focus like they did in New Orleans.

So in 85 the Tennessee loss cost them the ship. 86 was Penn State obviously. 88 was ND.

What about If Miami beats ND in 90. would they have won it?

92 was the bama loss.

So Penn State would have won it despite the Nebraska loss in 94?

Yes to 1990. At the very least a split title.

Buffs had a loss that year. They beat ND 10-9 in the OB.
