In the days following their biggest recruiting event of the year, the Miami Hurricanes have reeled in multiple commitments. Although one of their most recent commitments, 2020 Mallard Creek (NC) 3-star DE Quentin Williams, did not attend Paradise Camp, the groundwork had long been laid with the pass rusher and he saw no reason to wait any longer.
“It felt right, like it was time,” Williams said of his commitment. “The coaches were excited, coach (Jon) Patke said ‘Let’s go! Welcome to the family!’ That felt incredible.”
Williams’ father is a long-time Hurricanes fan from North Carolina. Mr. Williams joined his son on his first Miami visit back in April, and Quentin felt his father enjoyed the trip even more than him. When it came time to make his UM commitment last week, Quentin says it was an emotional moment for the family.
“I was trying to wait until my dad's birthday, but he knew what I wanted to do and told me to go ahead,” Williams said of his father. “I think he already knew, but he didn't want to ruin my moment, so he never said he knew. But when I made it public, he shed a tear.”
Williams is the first player Miami has pulled from the Tar Heel State since Braxton Berrios in 2014. He chose UM over a top group that also included West Virginia, UNC, Louisville, and Virginia Tech.
“I was born a Miami fan. That's my dream school,” Williams said. “The family vibe, the legends that played there all come back and mentor the young guys. It's football on the highest level. I may take some officials, but I'm 100% Cane.”
At the Opening Charlotte Regional in April, Williams put on a show in the combine testing, recording a 111.03 SPARQ score, a 4.80 40-yard dash, a 4.41 shuttle time, a 43 ft. powerball, and a 33.4 inch vertical. This puts him in elite territory in terms of athleticism among defensive ends in his class and will certainly play in an attacking defense such as Manny Diaz’s system at Miami.
“I think I'm pretty versatile,” Williams said. “I can move around and get in the backfield.”
Right now, the Hurricanes are working with a top 10 2020 class regardless of which recruiting service you prefer, and Category20 is growing by the day.
“The class is looking real solid. I just saw (Michael) Redding committed,” Williams said. “I'll meet more people when I come down end of July.”
