Something I've thought about at various times during the year, was who the coach on the field was for the defense.

I don't think it's an accident at all that the best defense that D'Onofrio has had while employed at the University of Miami, was captained by Sean Spence. D'Onofrio has been quoted in the past as saying that Sean Spence is one of the smartest football players that he ever coached and he was able to be a lot more multiple and complex with his calls, because he knew that Sean could get guys lined up. Even with my Giants, our defense sucked until we brought in Beason who is able to call the defense and get guys where they should be.

My question is, do we have a guy who a knowledgeable, film junkie who is currently in the linebacking core and can align guys properly?

Preseason a lot of the players said jimmy Gaines was the "general"

Idk how though he was lost as Fack all season

I don't think that matters. I think Gaines probably did just fine in this respect. In fact, I thought our defense looked the best it ever happens in terms of aligning and communicating presnap. When Dono first got here we were often looking at the sidelines a few seconds before the snap. That is fairly rare now.

Moreso I think what's happened is Dono's been here long enough for teams to establish the many weaknesses of our defense, and they hit those hard once the ball is actually snapped. I don't think bringing Spence back (for instance) would cover for the generalized confusion/sluggishness we have on all levels of our defense, and I hope the coaches don't think that way. It's this type of thought process that would allow these guys to make minimal changes rather than the wholesale defensive changes that they need to make.

I'm not even ready to think about all of this ****. I don't think we're gonna be any better next year. We have some big time issues at LB and DT....still
