-Gatorbait's Thomas Goldcamp answers questions about Florida
With regards to the Toledo game, was it what you expected from Florida or did anything surprise you?
Says he doesn't think anything really was surprising. It was pretty much what everybody expected going in. Florida was pretty vanilla and didn’t do anything exotic on offense or defense. Really they didn’t want to show their hand before the Miami game. They played to the running game on offense and they controlled the clock. On defense they didn’t show any blitzes or anything like that. The plan was pretty much to keep it simple and stay healthy for Miami.
Do you expect the offense to open up things more against Miami?
Says he doesn't think there is any question. Florida likes to run a lot of motions and shifts out of the backfield to keep defenses honest and they didn’t really do that against Toledo and he thinks you will see more of that against Miami. He thinks you will also see a lot more play action and attempts to get the ball downfield more. Florida had a lot of success throwing the ball short against Toledo. Jeff Driskel looked good, but you wonder what happens when he plays against better athletes like Miami and the windows get smaller and the corners start to cut off a little more and the safeties are a little closer to the play. One of the big question marks for Florida going into the Miami game is can they make those plays against a better team that will play you tighter.
What weapons do you think could emerge in the passing game if Florida is going to open it up on offense?
Says he thinks Trey Burton is one of those guys. He is not flashy, but he is a jack of all trades. He looks a little bit faster this year and he had a good game against Toledo. One guy who he thinks Florida might try to involve more is freshman Demarcus Robinson. He's not sure if they threw to him at all--they might have targeted him once against Toledo. Says he doesn't know if that was by design or if things weren’t open for him. He was a guy that was raved about all through camp and we got to watch three open practices and he is the real deal. Says he was surprised he didn’t get more looks against Toledo. Says he almost feels like he was a guy they didn’t want to show their hand with. If Matt Jones is 100 percent, he can make an impact in the passing game too.
In what ways do you think Jeff Driskel has improved this year?
Says he feels like his pocket presence is a little better. He is a little bit more comfortable there. One thing they have really tried to work on with him is being able to throw before guys come out of their breaks. He thinks he did ok with that against Toledo but the question is can he do that against Miami? There are signs that he has taken that next step, but we will see.
Tell us about the offensive line and what their strength and weakness is this year?
Says their strength is running the ball. Says injury has hit them pretty tough because they have lost their best offensive lineman in Jon Halapio for the Miami game. Their starting left tackle, D.J. Humphries went down with a sprained MCL. Florida is saying he is alright, but if he is not then you are looking at two new starters on the line. That can get tricky. As far as their weaknesses, one thing they continue to have trouble with is picking up blitzers. If linebackers are stacked on top of a defensive tackle, that gives them all kinds of trouble. Also, corner blitzes give them trouble because the backs struggle with picking them up and Jeff Driskel doesn’t read them at all.
What kind of workload do you expect RB Matt Jones to get against Miami as he comes back from illness?
Says if it wasn’t a noon game, he would think he would be a full go. No matter how much you try to get him ready, he is not going to be 100 percent the first time you throw him out there from a fatigue standpoint. Says you can expect maybe 15 carries, but he thinks he is a guy that when he is 100 percent he will get 20 or 25 carries a game. He will probably be somewhere between 15 to 20 carries. He thinks Florida is probably confident with what Mack Brown showed against Toledo and he will get a little more than 10 carries as well.
What do you think is the strength and weakness of Florida’s defense this year?
Says the strength is the defensive line and that front four. Toledo was getting the ball out quick and even with that, Florida was able to get pressure with just four linemen. They did that really well last year and they think they can do that even better this year. They rely on their secondary to play a lot of man coverage and they do a good job with that. Says the weakness might be covering the athletic tight end or athletic guys out of the slot. When the linebackers are matched up on a tight end, they really do struggle.
Who would you say the best player on the defense is?
Says right now it's Dominique Easley. Antonio Morrison would also be in that conversation, but he doesn't want to pick him because he didn’t play against Toledo. Easley is lining up right over the center and his burst off the ball is something I have never seen before. He is extremely disruptive up front.
How much does getting Antonio Morrison and Loucheiz Purifoy back for Miami help the defense?
Says he thinks it is huge. Morrison is a guy that they expect to be the anchor of the defense. Purifoy might be their third or fourth best corner in terms of coverage ability, but he makes a lot of plays and is great at getting the ball out. They need that on this defense after losing a guy like Matt Elam.
Was there a common theme for the games that Florida struggled in last season?
Says one thing is that if you can get up early on Florida, it totally disrupts their game plan. If Florida goes down seven or ten points early and the offense is not clicking, things can get tough for them in a hurry. Says the number one thing is to get an early lead against Florida and then the second thing is to work some blitzers against them on defense. If you run a couple zone blitzes here and there, Florida can have trouble with that on offense.
