Plus you still have the NCAA's APR/DPR/GSR to consider. You want guys on the team that are going to actually graduate. That matters.
I don't recall the newest NCAA interpretation but I think players transferring out don't hurt you, in terms of degree progress. I think players leaving early do.

And many coaches have team GPA provisions in contracts as well.

Have a friend on a DI wrestling staff. They don't have large recruiting classes. But they take a guy a year for his academic potential and use him to balance out the other side of the equation. That guy can still wrestle, but likely will never see the mat.
