Deerfield Beach ATH Brandon Powell has had a jam-packed summer, which has included participating in multiple camps, committing to Tennessee, de-committing from Tennessee, and then committing to Miami last weekend. The versatile athlete was also taking an online class in order to graduate early and get to Miami in January.
“I just finished my online economics class that was required so right now I’m set to just play the season, get it over with, and go off to college in January,” said Powell who boasts a 4.2 GPA.
Powell wasted no time committing to Miami after de-committing from Tennessee earlier in the same day.
“It’s really good because I don’t like all the hype and the attention so that’s really why I wanted to get it over with before the season started so I can focus on football. It’s a big relief.”
Something that Powell likes is the fact that Miami’s recruiting class is filled with players from the South Florida area.
“It’s always good to compete against other South Florida players. Going to college with them will make all of us great because everybody from South Florida is an athlete and we will make each other better by going against each other in practice.”
Miami offensive coordinator James Coley told Powell they would use him in the Duke Johnson role. What did that mean to the speedster?
“That just shows all my hard work is paying off and all the coaches see it in me. I’m just going to keep working so the coaches continue to see it in me.”
Although Powell expects to play primarily running back, he is not closed to the idea of working in at other spots.
“I’m 100% committed to playing running back, but if they need me somewhere else or wherever the money is whether it’s cornerback or slot, I’ll do anything to help out my team.”
Some speculated that Powell’s commitment signaled a decline in Miami’s interest towards Dalvin Cook, but the Deerfield Beach star says that is not the case.
“I haven’t really talked to Dalvin much because he’s committed to UF, but Hurlie Brown told me they still wanted him really badly.”
