Want to go to ??? um maybe Charlotte? Or where ever the ACC has yet to announce as its 2014 title game location. Well here is a break down of the schedule with some positives and negatives.
You can look at this schedule and say a few things. It is a tough schedule for us, much tougher than last year. The ACC did us no favors, with the exception of the off weeks before VT and FSU. I try to stay impartial in these threads but to be straight up honest I have not seen anything where I think an extra week is going to help us.
Say what you want about Golden and the Defensive staff. You can also talk about the team we have coming back. Everyone that is anyone is back on defense. We lose the gun slinger QB and some key OLine pieces. All of the above will contribute to this season.
The positive:
* We open with Louisville - the team should be motivated. UL has a new QB and loses a ton of talent and they have a new head coach. If we have to play them the first game is the best option.
*The bye weeks between FSU and VT - lets hope we can get healed up.
* FSU, UNC, Duke are all at home
* We close with the two weakest teams in the division - this way after the meltdown we should be able to mask some anger by winning 2 games to end the year. Or if we are having a bad year and lose these games it means changes are coming.
The negatives:
*We open with Louisville - I am really afraid of what happens if we lose this game.
*The stretch from Nebraska to FSU is murderers row for a team with our talent level or our coaching staff (which ever side you fall on)
*We continue to get screwed with the cross division schedule. This year is worse than ever. The only way it could be worse is if you trade UL for Clemson. We play two of the three best Atlantic teams.
* There is a chance we enter November with nothing to play for. On the flip side it could all come down to November
What does this all mean?
If you breakdown the schedules of everyone in our division it does not look good. My #1 goal for this team is to make it to the ACC title game. And because of the schedules of the other Coastal teams it looks like the minimum record for that to happen is 6-2, and that record means we have to win a tie breaker. And I do not see us going 6-2 and winning the tie breaker with our schedule.
Why do you ask? I think we all agree that the title goes through UNC, Duke, or VT. Here is who those teams play from the Atlantic:
VT - BC, Wake (they are looking at 2-0)
UNC - Clemson, NC St. (at worst 1-1)
Duke - Syracuse, Wake (2-0 is a good chance)
Miami - Louisville, FSU
Just based on the way things have been playing out year over year. We must split our Atlantic games and then we cannot afford to lose to VT or Duke from the Coastal. Losing one of those will cost us a tie breaker. We could lose to UNC and then they lose to Clemson would keep us alive.
With all that said. I wrote this for your entertainment, what are your thoughts? I know if we just win it will take care of itself but I am not sure we can do that. The cross division schedule continues to be a thorn in our side until we can play at Miami level.
Here's to a long off season of positive stuff.
