Positional inconsistency with backup plans

What's odd to me is some positions DO appear to have backup plans and some do not. For instance, with the increasing probability that Solomon goes to Michigan, we hear about Gordon doing an official this week and the kid from Rockledge (Brothers) as backup plans. At Db, with the constant concern of TS, we hear about Nunn, and with Nunn likely gone, we hear about Amerson.

At wide receiver, after just signing four guys and having a stud like Payton locked in, we hear about Haselwood, TJ Jones, and now, even Dunmore as a surprise.

At quarterback, Jon whiffs on Johnson in the late summer. Okay that sucks. Everyone loses recruiting battles. But then we hear NOTHING about qb recruiting until late November/now when the early signing day is weeks away. Obviously there is a lot of secrecy, etc, to recruiting that we don't know. But we have had ZERO official visits for qbs since Johnson's recruitment finished months ago. And now maybe MAYBE McIver might be interested. This of course is ignoring the context with our starting qb being suspended before, and both non-graduating backups being suspended (including one of them twice). So rather than light a fire under them with more competition we recruit no one?

At offensive line, our KNOWN biggest position with depth issues, we go for guys like Neal, Washington, and Egaukan/Tarquin are committed. This all makes sense but arguably we need 5 guys to process out the remaining crappy depth we have. And, for the last month, Neal appears to be Bama bound, Washington is STILL committed to MSU, and Egaukan was constantly flirting with Auburn before ditching for UF. So we know all these things (minus Kingsley's ditching) at least a month ago, yet Smith was not offered until now. Contact supposedly has not been there for any other South Florida Olinemen and yet there are power five guys like Boateng, Pope, Fox, and even good projects like Cartwright, Bailey, and Boyd all in our backyard.

This is another way of proving that Richt is too concerned with calling plays and not enough with CEO/systemic involvement work with having a hand in the overall recruiting on this team. Recruiting seems too decentralized when you see such radical inconsistency from position group to position group. The head coach needs to make sure all groups are coming close to their targets/overall goals.

You are correct except for 1 thing. There’s no way in **** Richt is spending that much time focusing on the offense, he has to be doing something else like building model airplanes or something.

Good points everywhere... BUT I would say that we are hearing about OL backup plans for OL now, and these kids were committed a LONG time. AND although the need for a LT is glaring and it's a def need...I would say OL ranks behind all front 7 positions this year on the totem pole. DT,DE,LB were the top needs then QB(Lol what a butcher job), OL, P (emerged during the season).

JMO.

Richt isnt a ceo. Never has been. Doesnt like to manage people.

It was clear from his forst year he wasnt managing recruiting on D or OL. He isn’t a noted evaluator.

He did spend all fall playing OC. Recruiting reflects it.

He isn’t a good OC, and can’t be a HC and OC at same time. But he isn’t a good HC, either.

Recruiting these days isnt really controlled by the staff. They will take the blame and take the reward also, but most of the work is done by the support staff. They set up everything from officials to in homes. All the coaches do is serve as a figure and create a relationship.

It’s not a coincidence that the two positional groups that have underperformed this season are also the two positional groups that are going through recruiting woes, maybe we should look at the source of the problem. Jon Richt & Searles imo

I think the biggest indictment is completely ignoring the local OL talent. This is actually a decent year depth wise locally. There aren't big time 4/5 stars locally for the most part, but there a lot of quality P5 level prospects. For a position of need it is gross negligence to just ignore guys like Smith, Fox, and Pope. This is actually the opposite of the we have done at the DB side, where we learned from last year and made good evals on local prospects that were a bit under the radar.
