PFF: Highest graded units - QB and LB

Linebacker Unit
Power Four: Miami (FL) Hurricanes – 90.2
Miami’s linebacker unit is second in the nation with a 91.5 coverage grade this season. It’s also one of only three FBS linebacker units with an 80-plus grade both in coverage and in run defense. Wesley Bissainthe is above 80.0 in both categories, one of two linebackers in the country to accomplish that feat.

Quarterback Room
Power Four: Miami (FL) Hurricanes – 93.4
Since there’s only one quarterback on the field at any given time, this is mostly due to Cam Ward tying for first among Power Four signal-callers with a 92.3 grade this year. His 17 big-time throws are also second among all quarterbacks in the nation. While it’s come on only 32 snaps, it should be noted that sophomore backup Emory Williams has a 93.5 overall grade as well.

When asked to drop into zone our LBs have actually been very good in coverage. We just have played man an absurd % of the time. Good for them

Wes has been our 2nd best player on defense, i give baron the edge for early in the year but since ball st he’s been more quiet pass rush wise. Bain has been hurt, he will reclaim the title soon lol

Wes truly looks like a totally different player instinctively, last year his eyes would get him in trouble but man he’s so patient now the game has slowed down and he looks like the player we all thought we were getting from central

Someone who has a pff subscription should post all the grades for the first half of the season lol

Personal opinion, I only acknowledge PFF stats for trenches. Otherwise they are useless to me. Besides missing tackles, the LB rushing D has been good. LB pass coverage is bad across the board. Yes, their have been plays like a Wes pick.
Cam is great, but he also has his flaws. He played a big part in us almost losing to Cal. Their were players open all game, not just the 4th qt. He has to real in his hero ball and also throw the **** ball away. It is slowly getting more out of hand each game. If he could do that, he is the top pick to me. A easy fix, but it's something he has done for many years now. Can he do it?
The staff has to coach these players up. Who made up, you have to take the good with the bad crap? 1. Clean up the hero ball. 2. Seem to be addressing the run game and Dawson with his staff are killing it. I also realize Dawson has better talent across the board with experience this season than Guidry does. Guidry's talent with experience is coming.

This is clearly not true on the linebackers unless this is the worst year of linebacker play in the history of CFB. Cam really has been excellent though.

He has, but Wesley is playing the best we've had in a decade. Big reason I hated the Alderman recruitment. That spot would have been served well in the secondary.
First time I saw Alderman at Miami I thought he was a chubby walk on fullback

I assumed he was being brought here to start and didn’t pay much attention while he was being recruited

Wes has been a revelation though. I remember people saying spring games don’t matter and there’s nothing you can take from it, but he stood out in that game to me and it’s carried over

Well said and I totally agree. As i posted before, Cam has acknowledged his "Hero" ball after both VT and Cal . Going forward these teams are all gonna play two deep zone until he shows the discipline to consistently pick them apart. He needs and we need more of 4th quarter Cam. GO CANES

You might be right that LB play, but I would argue it has become the most difficult position to play well, and as such, the standard for good play has been lowered. Most teams only play with 2 true LB’s anymore at a time except in obvious running situations. The LB’s all have to be able to play the pass and run. Used to be that of a 3 person LB crew, 1 LB always had the responsibility to cover the TE. The MLB was typically just a run stopper. Now every LB has to be fast enough to cover a TE or even an RB, and big enough to take on a guard and still bring down the RB.

So let me ask you this to highlight how difficult it is to play LB with today’s offenses. Tell me 1 LB we have faced this year you would want to have at UM? The guy from Cal was good but I wouldn’t take him over Wes or Kiko. Same for Howard or James on UF.

Now let me ask you to name the best LB you can think of in college football. In year’s past there have always been some pre-season studs at ILB. Now the best known LB’s seem to basically be rush ends (think TJ Watt), and I still can’t name anyone.

I’m not arguing the UM’s LB’s are the best because I have not watched enough college football to come to that opinion. And Wes did make a mistake on the long run by Johnson for UF and got pinned inside, and Kiko has over run plays. BUT to your point, Wes and Kiko still might be better than any other LB unit on college football. It can all be true.

I would take the guy from Cal over anybody we have and I would take Pup over Kiko but I’m not an expert at all. Agree with the general point that the position is hard to play. I think our system asks a lot of them both athletically and mentally. We need a talent injection there bad next year. We don’t have anybody other than Wes who is regularly disruptive.
