I hate the NC-double-******* as much as the next guy, but I gotta say, I don't envy them in this ****.
As far as the majority of the country was concerned, they were handed a smoking gun by Mr. Charles 'Pulizer' Robinson and Yahoo! (<---the ! is still ***goty) Sports. However, most Miami fans (or anyone reading for context) could tell you quickly that Yahoo!'s expose was actually a bunch of exaggerated bull****, fit more for the cover of the National Inquirer than for ESPN.
Obviously, when the NCAA investigators found that their 'smoking gun' was actually just a couple of spent shells and a hole in the wall, they tried their best to secure something serious, somehow, and eventually, by any means necessary.
The NCAA's job of policing amateur athletics is impossible and thankless, and, to add to their task, they employed incompetents, were set up by the lawyer of a known liar and felon, and put in an unenviable position by a hack journalist.
You gotta feel bad for the ****ers...for about a half second. Then you join everyone else pointing and laughing.
