I know this is random, but do schools have to do the traditional marching band style and uniforms? How much of that stuff is regulated? It is definitely a good time and great tradition, but it just struck me that I have never seen anybody do anything different. For a school like FIU or FAU or even a USF that has no real tradition, I think it would be cool to explore different kinds of bands. I think a rock and roll house band of sorts, with a much smaller brass section but still having it, would kill it and probably cost 1/10th of what it does to keep up with the band.

Some bands like Stanford are definitely not traditional.

At any rate, school has enough money to keep the band.

FAMU band, when they aren't in trouble, are pretty amazing and certainly non-traditional. And I can't believe I'm saying this, but the Suckeye band does some pretty cool stuff. Overall, though, marching band on field = time to get more beer.

Rice and Stanford don't have "traditional" bands. Until like 10 years ago, UVA didn't even have a marching band, they only had a "pep" band.
