I've gotten over the 1987 Fiesta Bowl in the sense Miami laid and egg and Vinny threw the game away with five interceptions. I will never get over the 2003 Fiesta Bowl and that brutal evening in that stadium around those mouth-breathing Buckeyes fans.
The fact the Canes played their worst game early and got beat in the trenches—as well as overcoming the McGhee injury—they still did the work to tie the game, get to overtime, score first and get a defensive stop. 24-17 in OT; game over. Back-to-back champs. 35-game win-streak would've run to 42 games (before losing at Virginia Tech on November 1st). No idea if another title buys Larry another year after the 2006 debacle, or what that does to the
Miami football timeline in an alternate universe—but it still should've been a sixth title, back-to-back rings and a 42-game win-streak in the book. The fact the 2002 class had a championship stolen from them; unforgivable and unforgettable.
If the football gods exist, Miami finds a way to the national championship game against Ohio State in January and beats the Buckeyes for a national title on the 20-year anniversary of that snow-job in the desert.
