Although there is plenty of wide receiver talent in South Florida for the 2014 class, Miami isn’t limiting their search at the position to the area. 4-star WR Braxton Berrios (5’9”, 180) of Leesville Road High School in Raleigh, North Carolina is a name on Miami’s radar.
“I’m very versatile. A lot of people compare me to Wes Welker and yes I am 5-9, 5-10 and white, but I can be used at running back, I’ve started at safety since my freshman year so I’m versatile, athletic, quick, fast, and have great hands. If I drop a ball, I do 100 pushups as punishment,” said Berrios.
Berrios spent Spring trying to improve his entire body of work.
“I wanted to improve on everything and it can still get better, whether it’s route-running, elusiveness, and all the little things. I worked on it all. We can’t have a true spring in pads like a lot of these other states, so we go out there and do 7-on7s. All in all, my spring went really well.”
What type of offense is Berrios looking to play in at the next level?
“I don’t want to go to a school that throws the ball five times a game obviously since I’m a receiver. At the end of the day, you want to go somewhere that’s balanced and not spread, but not completely pro-style either.”
The speedster holds offers from the likes of Clemson, UNC, Virginia Tech, and South Carolina, but itsn’t rushing into any decisions.
“I’m trying to take it all slow. I’m graduating early so that speeds it up a little bit and I’ll be making a decision in late September, but I try not to be overwhelmed by the entire process, which is hard at sometimes. You just have to slowly sort things out and go school-by-school. I don’t have a top 5 or top 10 yet. It’s working out for me so far, I’m just not worrying or stressing about anything yet.”
Berrios had a relationship with former Miami receivers coach George McDonald, but it wasn’t until recently that Brennan Carroll reached out to him.
“I actually talked to Coach Carroll through email last week and whoever runs the Hurricanes recruiting Facebook, I’ve been talking to them most frequently. I’ll be down there for camp on June 22nd. Hopefully I can show them what I want to see.”
Berrios has a unique connection to Miami.
“A lot of my family is down there. I’ve been a die-hard ‘Canes fan since the day that I can remember, even back in the 2002 National Championship game when we got **** robbed by Ohio State. My grandparents are up in the St. Pete area now, but I still have aunts and uncles down in Miami. My dad actually graduated from Southridge (1986).”
