In the latest episode of The CanesInSight Podcast, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Miami Hurricanes' offensive line commit, Deryc Plazz. Plazz, hailing from the Jacksonville area (Mandarin HS), proved to be an impressive and intelligent young athlete with immense potential. As Plazz himself stated, "Miami is a beautiful place... It was a no-brainer for me."
Plazz's decision to join the Miami class didn't come without its fair share of offers and interest from other schools. Previously committed to Penn State, with NC State also in the mix, Plazz ultimately chose Miami. When asked about what separated Miami from the pack, Plazz emphasized, "With Miami, I built a great connection... everybody treats you like family." He highlighted the genuine atmosphere that Miami provided, where he felt valued and supported by both the coaching staff and the community.
A crucial factor in Plazz's commitment was the track record of Miami's coaching staff, particularly in developing offensive linemen. Plazz spoke highly of Coach Cristobal and Coach Mirabal, saying, "Coach Mirabal and Cristobal have been putting offensive linemen in the NFL for years... They work together really well... what they've done has been working and is going to work at Miami." Plazz expressed confidence in their ability to shape him into a first-round draft pick, affirming, "If I come to Miami and grind and work and buy into the process, I could easily be a first-round draft pick."
During the conversation, Plazz also acknowledged his strengths as an athlete, stating, "They love my athleticism and my length." However, he recognized the areas he needs to improve, saying, "It's more so fine-tuning the little things that made me the best player I can be for the Miami Hurricanes."
The commitment to Miami wasn't solely about football for Plazz. He emphasized the importance of receiving a top-notch education, stating, "Miami is a private education top, top whatever education in the country right... I will have a great degree but I'm also at a phenomenal program that breeds legends."
Plazz's family played a significant role in his decision-making process. He discussed the extensive conversations he had with his mother, ensuring that she felt comfortable with his choice. Plazz explained, "She felt very comfortable... they're the right guys to build me into the man that I should be." The support of his family further solidified his commitment to Miami.
As Plazz's commitment to Miami garnered attention from fans and followers, he shared his message to the Canes fans, stating, "I'm blessed to be a part of the family... I'm just going to give them all for the University of Miami all the time... be a great guy for the community, a great team guy, and try to be a leader at all times." Plazz's dedication to Miami and his determination to contribute both on and off the field showcase his passion and commitment to the program.
Deryc Plazz embodies the old-school cane mentality, bringing a winning attitude and a strong work ethic to the Miami locker room. As Plazz prepares to join the team as an early enrollee in just a few months (January), the excitement among fans continues to grow.
