Offensive line -- what happened?

Others have written that NCST sold out against the run, but I didnt see that on a consistent basis. Curious to hear what the OL pros think.

Its not so much that they sold out on the run but they were keeping their linebackers close to the line of scrimmage for the run.

Thanks for the clarification. Question though, why wouldnt we have run more wide, like the play Duke scored on? Up the middle wasnt working, yet we kept doing it.

Good question and one I cant answer. I know we ran a toss to Duke that got a first down and what looked like some sweeps out of the shotgun but those got stuffed. I also noticed at least 5 or 6 runs that had space up the middle, but the play took so long to develop that either the cornerback or outside linebacker came all the way from the backside to make the tackle. The offensive line could have played better.

My guess is we wanted their LBs to stay in the box. Run a few times up the middle to keep them there and then pass till the cows come home.

Wasn't looking for it during the game yesterday, but did we run any misdirection or counter running plays? State seemed to be pressuring the line and getting to the ball pretty quickly when we ran; they also seemed to be disciplined against the run staying in their lanes.

It was more of them doing a good job. And dont forget they have some big boy DE's that are going to help keep the run in check. I think it really was just used as a way to keep the LBs in the box...

only one that I remember, one of the first plays in the game. Dorsett earned about 6 yards on it.

I saw several run wides that got stretched out w/ no gain or a loss, just as we could not get any yards up the middle. Once again, the supposed strength - our OL - is a weakness. And this is why I do not fault fisch. He does what he can to expose weaknesses on the defense, notwithstanding our underperforming OL.

Personally, I think the Canes OL is overrated, especially in the run game where they are simply average. NC State has an above average (ranked in the top 30) run defense - Miami hasn't won head-to-head in the trenches against those teams in quite some time. ND is ranked about the same as NC State so I don't think Miami will be able to consistently run against them either (although you always hope Duke can spring a couple of long runs).

Agreed. Our OL pass blocks pretty well but struggles with run blocking. I think Fisch recognizes this and schemes accordingly. I also think NC State was daring us to beat them through the air. Fisch took the bet and ran with it (no pun intended).

Until we consistently do this we will not have a championship offense.

- Ol is big on cohesion and attitude.

-This ol is completely "funny" to me in a wierd way.

Feliciano is a big brute guy, kinda sloppy, but is our best pulling guard and down the field blocker.
Oline is completely HUGE size wise...but they are better in pass pro than run blocking..WIERD..

Guarantee its attitude...they probably barely line it up in practice and go smash mouth..1.) our dline sucks..2.) our lbs are mostly hurt and arent that good anyway...
this ol is probably hurry up and pass pro all week in practice..our oc is a finese guy (steve spurrier guy)...so they have taken this personality...

add to it the plays called for particular guys are not RIGHT in my opinion...

For the rest of the year Mike James should NEVER ..NEVER..again take a shotgun snap zone read run...he's HORRIBLE,Vision isnt their, hes indecisive, and just plain out slow on these plays..the backside de that they leave unblock continues to make the tackle on these plays.

Against ND,FSU..im not anxious for these games their front 7 will feast if we cant show some sort of run game

Noone mentions the Wildcat and option plays.... Fisch was trying all kinds of stuff to open it up. They were throwing everybody on the line with lots of blitzes- assuming their all world DB's would hold up- saw how that worked out. Thanks for the passing record Tenuta.
