MNW won 35-18, forcing a three-way tie for the second playoff spot in the district behind Central.
-The number one thing I was looking forward to heading into the game was the possible match-up between Artie Burns and Ermon Lane, but unfortunately we didn't get to see the version of it that I had hoped for. Technically, we did see them one-on-one, but it was with Burns at receiver and Lane at corner. For some reason, Burns was very limited on defense today (I only saw him on one play), but was being used as a receiver all game before injuring himself in the 3rd quarter. Lane intercepted a pass while covering Burns, and the only pass that Artie caught was a screen.
-As far as Lane on the offensive side of the ball, there aren't many words to describe what he can do. In the words of D$, this kid is a "6-star prospect". His size-speed combination is absolutely elite, near the level of Julio Jones coming out of high school. He has great ball skills and attacks the ball at its highest point. He had two catches tonight over multiple DBs. It was obvious the Northwestern defense was keying in on him, but they could not stop him despite the lack of good QB play as well. This is the type of #1 big-time receiver that Miami has been lacking. I am really impressed with his ability to play on almost every snap of the game without letting up.
-I've seen MNW RB Darius Tice 4 times live this year, and he keeps on producing. It seems like every time I watch him play, he goes over 100 and is busting off long TD runs. An issue that I've noticed with him is that he fumbles the ball a good amount due to his high running style. I spoke to him after the game and he told me he is sitting on 4 offers: Utah State, FAU, Purdue, and Ole Miss. There have been a lot of people on the board asking about him lately as a possible back-up plan if Collins jumps ship. I said it last week, but I'll say it again: Very good and productive high school running back, but I don't see Miami-level back because he doesn't have great feet or moves along with his high running style.
-Again, I was disappointed to not have seen the Burns-Lane match-up, and I'm not really sure what the plan was with Artie with using him on offense, but not defense. I don't mind seeing him on offense (and he needs touches), but he needs to be used on defense and special teams on every single play.
