MNW won 35-18, forcing a three-way tie for the second playoff spot in the district behind Central.

-The number one thing I was looking forward to heading into the game was the possible match-up between Artie Burns and Ermon Lane, but unfortunately we didn't get to see the version of it that I had hoped for. Technically, we did see them one-on-one, but it was with Burns at receiver and Lane at corner. For some reason, Burns was very limited on defense today (I only saw him on one play), but was being used as a receiver all game before injuring himself in the 3rd quarter. Lane intercepted a pass while covering Burns, and the only pass that Artie caught was a screen.

-As far as Lane on the offensive side of the ball, there aren't many words to describe what he can do. In the words of D$, this kid is a "6-star prospect". His size-speed combination is absolutely elite, near the level of Julio Jones coming out of high school. He has great ball skills and attacks the ball at its highest point. He had two catches tonight over multiple DBs. It was obvious the Northwestern defense was keying in on him, but they could not stop him despite the lack of good QB play as well. This is the type of #1 big-time receiver that Miami has been lacking. I am really impressed with his ability to play on almost every snap of the game without letting up.

-I've seen MNW RB Darius Tice 4 times live this year, and he keeps on producing. It seems like every time I watch him play, he goes over 100 and is busting off long TD runs. An issue that I've noticed with him is that he fumbles the ball a good amount due to his high running style. I spoke to him after the game and he told me he is sitting on 4 offers: Utah State, FAU, Purdue, and Ole Miss. There have been a lot of people on the board asking about him lately as a possible back-up plan if Collins jumps ship. I said it last week, but I'll say it again: Very good and productive high school running back, but I don't see Miami-level back because he doesn't have great feet or moves along with his high running style.

-Again, I was disappointed to not have seen the Burns-Lane match-up, and I'm not really sure what the plan was with Artie with using him on offense, but not defense. I don't mind seeing him on offense (and he needs touches), but he needs to be used on defense and special teams on every single play.

Pete wasn't lying about Lane. The first thing that jumps out is his size. Lane was taller than everyone on the field and not as skinny as I thought. His hands are exceptional. He receives punts with his hands up like Rod Woodson and Koren Robinson back in the day. When the ball is in the air, he has some AJ Green-traits. On an early 4th and 8, he Mossed the corner to keep his team in the game. He did the same thing later on despite being held by **** near everyone on Northwestern. At corner, he looked a little like Sean Smith staying in Burns' pocket on a go, high pointing the ball and returning it about 35 yards.

By the end of the game, this is how Northwestern was covering him:

He caught a 30-yard fade on this play.

One thing I was watching was his attitude, and I came away pleasantly surprised. He played receiver, corner and special teams the entire game and didn't stop competing. There were no real antics. He was pretty quiet aside from subdued bicep flexing. When the big moments came he showed up, and he took the loss hard but didn't pout or make a show. The only thing that raised my eyebrow a bit was when he stepped out of bounds instead of finishing the run on a reverse. But it was a spectacular, reverse-field run on a fast Northwestern D that got him there in the first place.

His speed is legit, too. As Tito pointed out, Fabian Johnson ran a 4.39 at our camp and he ran him down pretty easily. Ermon Lane can be a legendary name in the city if he keeps progressing.

- Darius Tice runs fearless and has some serious get-up for a power back. Very strong lower body. He's somewhat similar to Dillard in terms of running style, but maybe a bit more explosive. Don't see him at Miami but he can be a very good back at the next level.

- Northwestern has some good players on defense that aren't Miami-types but can play. Gerald Wright (#51, Marshall commit) was the second-best player on the field, and #11 #6 are animals.

Thank you both for the insight (pun intended!), it is very much appreciated.

#51 Gerald Wright was the kid who scored 2 safeties last week in the loss to Central, putting NW up 4-0.

I am convinced that Tice could play for us, there´s nothing wrong with his feet or moves, in fact he is very quick in and out of his cuts, not just for a power back. Not nearly as straight-line as Dillard, much more explosive and talented imo.

****, that aint sunset or varela putting 2 guys on him. That is NORTHWESTERN!!!! Wow that is respect.

When I saw Lane earlier in the year his attitude really stood out, a receiver of his ability usually has some type of attitude or wont do the small things. Mind you he is in a run based offense and he barely had any balls thrown his way when I saw him play but he blocked hard on every play and never seemed to get out of the flow of the game as some receivers tend to do when there is no ball thrown their way.

Love to hear the fact that he had a unbelievable game against one of the perennial top schools in the state and a REALLY good defense this year in NW. Dmoney I am simply afraid of your comment about Lane not being looked at as a prospect by the staff in Coral Gables, can you elaborate on that, kid is possibly the best WR prospect down here in the last few years and we dont want him, REALLY????????? Please tell me this is a wez joke or something

No we're looking at him. Put it this way, I expect him to be a Cane until I here otherwise.
