Nice interview with Coach Al on WQAM today

Al needs to not do another interview until he wins a National Championship while going undefeated and curing cancer in the same year. He talks too much

Quick and Dirty

**Coach opens by reiterating the importance of guys coming into camp in shape; The standard now is that guys pass the fitness test; Says that its disruptive when guys are not in shape - "good weight gain and good strength gain"; Takes a commitment to beat the fitness test - "can't beat it alone" - guys had to work together and push each other to beat the test

**How do you put the 1s and 2s together? Coach replied that you come in with a resume of your past performance, but that past performance doesn't necessarily predict future performance - meaning you must continue to get better; Said that the team did what they were supposed to by coming in in shape but that's only one step - next step is preparing over the next 20 plus days; said that is what will determine our season; he talked about competition and how it helps to make the team better; "ultimately its how you perform in camp" [best players will play]

**Which tackle can also play guard - mentions Bunche 5.1 40 at 320 pounds [Wow!] Talked about the versatility of the OL and said Taylor is much improved; mentioned the guys coming in without going into it

**Are Stacy Coley and Artie Burns fast or are they not yet playing as fast as you know they played in high school? AG - "No they're fast!"; "The thing you never know is just what makes them tick" - says Artie has incredible poise and then attributes that poise to Artie's mom by calling her by her first name - Diana (Wow Coach just gets it - very nice pubic compliment! That's more than just a shout out, that's a guy who is really paying attention to his players and their families); Artie constantly learns - Artie has length and is unselfish; Says Stacy loves the game and has loose hips (wiggle); Coach ended that question by reminding everyone that we haven't put on pads yet so "let's just keep it in perspective"

**Do you have a Duke Johnson like skill guy who can return kicks? Coach mentions Malcolm Lewis, Artie, Stacy, Corn, Jamal, and Crawford - but someone will have to beat out Duke to earn that spot

**Do you have to worry about other coaches recruiting our verbal commitments? Coach Golden - Yes you do. Coach shifts the focus from what other coaches are doing on the recruiting trail and instead discusses how mature our team is. Says that by them doing what they're supposed to do it allows the coaches to focus on recruiting. (Again, another he just gets it moment) "When your house is in order you have a chance to be great." But yes you've got to work hard at recruiting all the time.

**Coach then talked about blocking out all the preseason hype - says that our standards are set by the men [Canes] that played here before who had a standard of excellence - those are the expectations; says that we have GREAT senior leaders and names them; says he hopes [expects] that when a player is not doing their part that one of the seniors will get in their face and tell them they only have 14 more games to play as a Miami Hurricane and to get it in gear because everyone of our games is precious - no reset button; says we'll see if the leaders are tough enough to do that and if the team is unselfish enough to respond (Clearly coach is working his degree in psychology - good way to publicly emphasize a point he probably preaches privately all the time)

**Do you feel better about the DTs? Coach responded that he doesn't understand how we wouldn't feel better about them considering the off season gains we made - mentions Porter and Pierre as examples - says they played really well when they weren't as big or as strong as they are now; says we're bringing in some big guys who should be able to help us but doesn't want to say too much about that prematurely

Interesting interview AG said he wants a National Championship this year "quote people picked us to win the coastal thats nice But I want to finish 4 spots above that ( 1. ACC title game 2. ACC Champion 3. BCS Title Game 4. BCS Champion).

Also he called out the 2014 JUCO DT Cory Johnson's commitment to Kentucky (7-20-13) with a reference to a recruit who upto two weeks ago had told staff on two occassions he was coming to UM then he up and commits elsewhere. AG sounded ****ed about that one, which is understandable since they had a relationship going back to Temple.

This will be a very good season and its good to hear the headman speaking frankly.

Interesting take on the Cory Johnson part.

yeah you could definitely hear a lil disdain in his voice when talking about Johnson picking Temple which obviously came as a shock to staff who were under the impression that the kids word was stronger than oak! That's recruiting for ya. You never know what is gonna happen so do spot is secure and commitments unfortunately aren't sacred. Always stay hungry on the trail just incase someone decides to up and leave you high and dry!

How do you know he said that about Cory?

I believe he was the only recruit within the last two weeks that was on our board that chose a different school. Paranos is probably going with the process of elimination which is what I arrived at too. However its just speculation looking at the current situation.

Did Smothers ever say he was coming our way. I thought he was just showing an interest and seeing if it was mutual. **** I dunno.
Could be Smothers too.

Smother committed this week, AG specifically said in the radio interview that two weeks ago we had a young man commit elsewhere whom told us twice he was coming, that was johnson on July 20 th. Johnson gave multiple interviews saying UM was his clear #1.

Listen to the interview and you will hear it clearly. Also I don't think losing Smothers even compares to losing a player of the caliber and potential of Cory Johnson the kid will be a beast at the nose immediately an Golden knows it which is why he is ****ed.
