So as I'm watching the over-reactions from many who are claiming that our recruiting class is falling apart, I also am seeing many names announced as entering the portal. I just saw that Tyler Morris, WR from Michigan, just entered the portal among others. Meanwhile, Billy's bagmen are working overtime making offers that would put a smile on Jaden Rashada's face. We've lost Nix, Merritt and Stubbs. Stubbs has flipped twice; he has some Cormani in him (pause). I saw a tweet saying Miami got tired of Merritt leveraging Tennessee against us for NIL so they told him goodbye. How much of that is true vs PR (You can't fire me, I QUIT!), but my brain started thinking.....
If you have a budget of X for high school recruiting and portal additions combined, why would you tie up a larger percentage of it on 17 and 18 year olds who will be riding the pine for a year or two when you can spend it on guys who are older, more experienced, and have proven that they can play in college? I'm not advocating for one or the other - I believe you need a blend of both, but it needs to be a smart blend. Giving Pancake Honcho a very large NIL deal (presumably) so that he could pour maple syrup on pancakes on signing day and not produce for two years here (yes, I'm aware of the injury and that stinks) is a terrible business move, especially if he hits the portal this offseason. Talk about a zero ROI. If the other schools are going to overspend on high school kids who will end up in the portal in a year or two, it kinda makes sense to let the Tim Merritts of the world slide, no? If he pans out, we can always backdoor him (PAUSE) to transfer here. Yes it's a risky proposition, but I think many of us - myself included - are still looking at this through the lens of the last 80 years of college football recruiting and that lens does not work anymore. I'm curious to see how this pans out.
GO CANES ALWAYS!
