So as I'm watching the over-reactions from many who are claiming that our recruiting class is falling apart, I also am seeing many names announced as entering the portal. I just saw that Tyler Morris, WR from Michigan, just entered the portal among others. Meanwhile, Billy's bagmen are working overtime making offers that would put a smile on Jaden Rashada's face. We've lost Nix, Merritt and Stubbs. Stubbs has flipped twice; he has some Cormani in him (pause). I saw a tweet saying Miami got tired of Merritt leveraging Tennessee against us for NIL so they told him goodbye. How much of that is true vs PR (You can't fire me, I QUIT!), but my brain started thinking.....

If you have a budget of X for high school recruiting and portal additions combined, why would you tie up a larger percentage of it on 17 and 18 year olds who will be riding the pine for a year or two when you can spend it on guys who are older, more experienced, and have proven that they can play in college? I'm not advocating for one or the other - I believe you need a blend of both, but it needs to be a smart blend. Giving Pancake Honcho a very large NIL deal (presumably) so that he could pour maple syrup on pancakes on signing day and not produce for two years here (yes, I'm aware of the injury and that stinks) is a terrible business move, especially if he hits the portal this offseason. Talk about a zero ROI. If the other schools are going to overspend on high school kids who will end up in the portal in a year or two, it kinda makes sense to let the Tim Merritts of the world slide, no? If he pans out, we can always backdoor him (PAUSE) to transfer here. Yes it's a risky proposition, but I think many of us - myself included - are still looking at this through the lens of the last 80 years of college football recruiting and that lens does not work anymore. I'm curious to see how this pans out.

GO CANES ALWAYS!

Great points. While watching Oregon, UGA, and even SMU and Ol Miss, it seemed like every impact player on those rosters were transfers. Manny Diaz had great success with transfers here at Miami and to a lesser extent at Duke this year. I think if you have the budget to go all out on both fronts, do it. If you are Miami and you have to choose which to prioritize, I think the smart move is the portal even though it’s more of a gamble…

I remember hearing last year that our distribution was tilted more towards high school and then from there it was based on position. I think that needs to be tweaked a little. There are some positions that just don’t come through the portal that much (stud OT/DT/NT). I think those positions have to be prioritized in high school and hope they pan out. We are taking an L with Pancake, but we hit on FM. I’d honestly take a 50 percent hit rate at those positions in hs, provided we cut bait sooner rather than later.

Most every other position can be had through the portal, but I think we need to pour more resources into the prep work side. I feel like many of the kids that portal out already have their destination in mind. We tend to want to wine and dine and we should be just showing up w/bags and saying “we ******?” I mentioned in another thread, we need a team of @Memnon peeps compiling a working transfer portal list, talking to peeps and be prepared so we know who we want before the kid even announces.

Im on board with what you’re laying out. I have to imagine the coaches already have compiled lists and/or have staffers compiling lists and dealing with agents/handlers.

Manny actually was better w TP evals than Mario.

I’m not looking for a debate and I’m not going to take the time to compile the data. I’ll just assume you’re correct. I will mention this though - do you really know Manny was better or are you just playing the result? And I don’t mean that comment as any sort of slam on you. I’m also not on the Mario Defense Council.
We have taken a lot of transfers under Mario. Like a ton. I don’t remember Manny taking anywhere near that manny (see what I did there?), which will obviously skew the results. So basically, I’m lazy and would like you to do some research on your own time, without pay, to prove your point before I sign off on it. Deal?

Are being for real? I seriously can’t tell and I’m unsure how I feel about what you said.
Qb Emory/transfer
TB Lyle/Fletch/AJ
FB/Flex Lofton
TE Rylie/Cam/Transfer/Freshman
OL
WR Zay/Trader/Carr/Chance/ Freshman/transfer

Gonna look a lot different but we can control the clock and use a ton of PA.

Are there any d coordinators out there who can bring 13 transfers with them like Cignetti did at Indiana?

He is absolutely serious and a part of the reason this fanbase deserves pain.
I hope this photo helps you understand how I read your comment.

I think we should bring in a solid portal QB. Not an elite guy so we can have additional funds for other players. Maybe back channel Mendoza. He’s more athletic than Emory. Connor Wegman just entered as well.

I’d be down for Wigger Wegman

I think our personnel of kids ready to play would do well in 12/22 packages next year,

That said, your comment was redic because of the Dorsey inclusion. I think Dorsey has a great mind, but seems to overthink/overcomplicate things and that would’t play well with college kids. If Dawson leaves, we need someone like Mullen who has traditionally made his system player friendly. It’s what we need as DC if Guidry leaves as well.

If you can't get Nussmeir or a top 3-4 QB, go with Williams.

Bring in 1-2 WR
Possibly a Center
2 DT
1-2 DE
Possibly a LB
3 DB, including hopefully 2 of the best you can find and this is where you spend the most money.

I actually think Mendoza would be a very good game manager playing behind our O-line. As much as I love Cam, trying to replicate the “Cam Ward experience” is not a practical strategy moving forward. Get me some Miami caliber linebackers and safeties and we’ll be fine.
