Al Golden made two brilliant hires in landing assistants James Coley and Mario Cristobal, especially considering what's still on their recruiting board in '13 and what lies ahead in their backyard in a great junior class.
One day Al Golden will look back to his 2013 class and say his two best recruits were James Coley and Mario Cristobal.
In two brilliant coaching moves in terms of recruiting Golden added these two assistants to his staff. Coley was announced yesterday while Cristobal came on board a few weeks ago. Both of these guys are two of the better recruiters in the state, specifically south Florida.
The ‘Canes found themselves in fierce recruiting battles with many from their own backyard like running back Alex Collins (South Plantation), wide receiver Stacy Coley (Oakland Park Northeast), offensive lineman Denver Kirkland (Booker. T. Washington), linebacker Matthew Thomas (Booker T. Washington), and defensive tackles Jaynard Bostwick (Port St. Lucie, Fla./St. Lucie West Centenniel) and Keith Bryant (Delray Beach, Fla./Atlantic).
You can bet that Coley and Cristobal certainly gives the edge to Miami now with many of that group above.
Looking ahead, it’s an absolutely loaded 2014 class in south Florida next season. Virtually every top positional recruit from the Sunshine State will be from south Florida (Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties) like running back Sony Michel (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage), wide receiver Ermon Lane (Homestead, Fla.), tight end Ravian Pierce (Plantation, Fla.), offensive lineman K.C. McDermott (Wellington, Fla./Palm Beach Central), defensive end Chad Thomas (Miami, Fla./Booker T. Washignton), defensive tackle Khairi Clark (Hollywood, Fla./Chaminade Madonna), cornerback Nigel Patton (Miami, Fla./Booker T. Washington), and safety Quincy Wilson (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./University School).
Then you have incredible athletes like Treon Harris (Miami, Fla./Booker T. Washington) and Quinton Flowers (Miami, Fla./Jackson) who can play multiple positions and could be the two most versatile players in the state next season.
And I haven’t even mentioned standout players like running backs Joseph Yearby (Miami, Fla./Central) and Dalvin Cook (Miami, Fla./Central), offensive tackle Trevor Darling (Miami, Fla./Central), defensive tackle Trevonte Valentine (Palm Bay, Fla./Bayside) and wide receiver Jacob McCrary (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) and Corey Holmes (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas).
Loaded. And they are all in Miami’s backyard. It’s setting up like a perfect storm for the Hurricanes.
The biggest issue the ‘Canes will have to face is what ultimately happens with the NCAA and upcoming sanctions. Certainly that will play an enormous role in their recruiting efforts. Anything light in terms of sanctions and you can bet that the ‘U’ will prove tough to beat on the guys from south Florida. The key is evaluating and recruiting the right ones for what they do.
Whether Miami is hammered by the NCAA or slapped on the wrist, the additions of Coley and Cristobal will help them in the all-important recruiting wars. This will hold true as they try and close strong in 2013 and no doubt it will help Golden and his program in next season’s talented group in south Florida.
