Discover Orange Bowl will match ACC against Big Ten, SEC or Notre Dame

GREENSBORO, NC –The Atlantic Coast Conference and the Orange Bowl Committee announced today that the Discover Orange Bowl will annually feature the ACC Champion against an opponent from the Big Ten Conference, Southeastern Conference or University of Notre Dame as part of the 12-year agreement that begins following the 2014 season.

In addition, ESPN will serve as the broadcast partner, and the historic bowl game will either be played in an exclusive prime-time window New Year’s Eve or on New Year’s Day, pending the schedule of the new collegiate postseason playoff games.

The selection of the opponent will be based on the guiding principle of securing the highest-ranked team in the final
standings available from the Big Ten, SEC or Notre Dame, but will also utilize criteria that shares the minimum appearance standards as agreed upon by all parties. The standards include at least three guaranteed appearances over the12 years for both the Big Ten and the SEC and a maximum of two with no minimum for Notre Dame.

I like this. No more Big East and more opportunities to beat Notre Dame and Ohio State

Still don't understand why the powers and money interests that be didn't just keep the BCS the way it was and have the top 8 teams in the nation go to a playoff that started with the four BCS bowls. After the Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, and Rose were played the four winners would then play it out. Leave it up to the NCAA to always ***** the pooch with everything they touch.

Because then it would turn into the NFL and I'd snore through the beginning of the season.

How would it turn into the NFL? By keeping the BCS in place it would ensure that every game still counts. Every team in the nation would be scratching and clawing to be in the top 8 teams. Please explain because I don't think you thought what you posted out very well. If anything the conference powers system now takes away from the competition.

This. Don't ***** up the enormity of huge matchups during the regular season for the sake of a playoff. Huge college footbal regular season games are really there own indivual events because they can mean so much in the grand scheme of things. Four teams is enough. Maybe six, with the top two teams getting a bye since they are usually the undefeated ones, but that would be it. Any more than that, and less people nationally are gonna care about huge top 10 or top 5 matchups that don't involve their team.

Do you think that Bama loss to A&M would be as huge if there was an eight team playoff? No one would have cared. Now in this instance it probably wouldn't have mattered in a four team playoff either, but there are many more that would matter.

Bama is one the best if not the best team in the nation until proven otherwise. Again, how would keeping the BCS in place and having the top 8 teams go play in the BCS bowls be a bad idea? If anything doing it by conference powers takes away from the competition. Nothing is wrong with the BCS in finding your top teams. The problem was teams that deserved a shot at the title never got it. An 8 team playoff of the top 8 is a perfect system IMO.
