Nevin Shapiro’s two roles:

After the actual sanctions that Miami gets, I am dreading most the coverage from local media about it.

Miami must have the worst local sports coverage in the country.

You guys remember the whole Tank Black deal that hit UF a few years ago. Black was a agent that was paying UF players, one being Jevon Kearse large sums of money. Also involved were Fred Taylor, Ike Hillard and other players still active within the program. I remember reading about how players was driving to practice in cars that were better than some of the coaches.

Did the NCAA even do anything in regards to that? I know UF just removed Kearse's name from records and such, other than that nothing was done.

So why is that the NCAA is dragging their feet in this think that has stretched into 2 Decembers and still no signs of when it will end?

This is classified as news?

More like a dimly written summary of the Shapiro-agent claims.

Those "[d]ocuments of Axcess’ business meetings, financial records and internal correspondence" that prompted this drivel didn't seem to expose much, did they? Maybe some corroboration of Shapiro's attempts at getting into the agency game by this Levinson fellow, who, by the way, was Shapiro's lawyer at the time and long-time friend. But even that isn't news. Shapiro has claimed he was recruiting UM players to the agency since last year, just as Huyghue has denied the same.

Oh my. Can't get over it.

"While Nevin Shapiro was handing out small amounts of cash like candy to the University of Miami’s star football players..."

"Now his dual roles, as team sugar daddy and unlicensed sports agent, hang over the university like an anvil that is about to come crashing down on UM’s storied football program."

"Scholarship reductions and another year or two of post-season bowl bans are potentially in store."

Ha!! It's not only poorly written, it's pointed, suggestive, and offensive.

The missed story here is how this Axcess business seems another fitting example of Nevin Shapiro claiming and hoping to be closer to the Miami program than he actually was. He's the team's "sugar daddy" but can only help secure two players over the span of a number of years? Please!!!

Manny, Jay, horrific reporting on a sensitive topic, determinedly slanted with an anti-home-team perspective. You can chalk this up to "shooting the messenger" all you want, but I hope that a thorough re-reading of your non-article opens your eyes to the true source of your readers' burning disgust for this sort of "journalistic" piece.

Pure trash. Embarrassing. If I hadn't grown unimpressed with the Herald last year, this piece of trash would have prompted my subscription's cancellation.

Do they have an editor?

I honestly don't think the Herald cares at this point. I think Manny and the Cane beat writers are given one parameter - print anything you can that is salacious, and we're ok if it's backed up by any source.

This. And yes journalism, regular or sports, print or broadcast, is indeed dead. It's become more about sizzle and sleaze than truth and substance.
