ND had their open Scrimmage this morning.

I hesitate to post anything about it because last time there was a lot of shooting the messenger. LOL

This is going to be overall things, nothing to take too much from.

Basically, it was mostly 2nd, 3rd & scout team playing.
Only one OL starter played, minimally.
Love tweaked his hamstring the first series & watched the rest. Probably shutting it down for spring.
Lambert, an OL battling to start, hurt shoulder and is done until fall practice.
The QBs played, which was interesting with all backup OL playin.
It seems Carr, the former top 5 QB, will be the starter. He came out with the 1’s, & had the best throws. No mistakes, even being pressured the entire time.

ND’s defense with Golden was blitz heavy last year with so many DL injuries.
This year they got four guys back that were injured last year, on top of the guys who played DL in their absence, and they lived in the backfield without blitzing.
Two of the DT’s who were hurt last year and are back are noticeably much bigger than the DTs they had to play in the CFP.
The DL with everyone back dominated the scrimmage against the 2nd string OL.
The LBs & Secondary brought everyone back except one, so there’s that.

They said they don’t have enough players available to have two teams for their spring game. So they will be doing offense vs defense. And a lot of 1st string will not play.

They feel they are deeper than they were last year. Only position with a legit question is QB.
With so many offensive guys sitting out the spring, they won’t decide anything at QB until fall camp.

From what I was told, exactly what you would expect to happen when the whole defense from a top 3 defense is back went against a 2nd string offense, happened. One-sided.

I’m leaving it at that. Any specific questions anyone has, I can try to find out.

All I got from this is your team is

Their Secondary & OL are easily top 3 in the country.

The game will come down to how well we run the ball & how well our Front 7 stops the run.

From what I've read thus far in the Spring, ND's passing game may be better than it was last year. Mainly because Riley Leonard while being a mobile running QB, was also a very limited passer & supposedly Carr & Angeli have much better arm talent, which has allowed Denbrock more versatility in offensive playcalling & install.

How much of that is true? We'll find out in August/September.

But either way, the game will all revolve around the run; winning it on Offense & stopping it on Defense.

I don’t think we match up well with ND. Hate starting the season off with an L but barring any Mario catastrophes we should hit 9 wins at least.
I’m surprised at what you said about Carr. I think Angeli can really throw the ball.

Your whole defense isn’t back. Aren’t you replacing 6 starters?
Not my defense.
Last year ND lost their two starting DE’s, Traore & Botehlo, early in season. Both are back. 3 of 4 DEs who replaced them & played the CFP are back.
ND lost 3 of 4 DTs during season, two of which played in the CFP. Two, plus two more who played in CFP, are back.
3 of 4 Starters in the secondary for the CFP (Gray, Moore, Shuler) are back.
If you look at the two deep for the CFP, only 2 players aren’t back. But three original starters are back.
The 6 lost, 5 were guys who weren’t the original starter or didn’t play in the CFP.
The only starter who played all season was Watts at Safety.
The Defense will be bringing back more than 11 guys who actually started multiple games, including the CFP.

They lose 2 out the secondary right with Morrison and watts. Either way I’m not worried about their defense

Under Freeman one thing I noticed they are much more physical these last couple of years-

It’s going to be a very tough matchup-

Turnovers and the line of scrimmage will be determining factors on who wins.

I’m excited for this game and see where this team stacks up. Love seeing the Canes playing in big nationally televised games.
I hate ND, so losing to these phags will certainly sting but we I don’t think we have much to lose and a lot to gain even if we play it close.
They will be heavily favored and losing an out of conference game early in the season is not the end of the world.

I don’t think they get everybody Back on defense. There are some NFL Draft prospect from that defense about to be chosen Real High. Two all - Americans from the Secondary is nothing to sneeze at.

These guys will be the best team we play by far. But we hang if we can stop their run. I expect Beck and Dawson will score some points. Gotta be able to get off the field in defense.

I agree. They have been a good o-line running offense and good defense since Kelly got there years ago. They seem to play harder for Freeman than they did Kelly. It’s a good test early in the year and with there being a playoff, I don’t think teams will suffer with a struggle at the beginning of the year
