NC State (Game 3) 1pm ACCNX

It’s had it ups and downs for sure, but I have hundreds of great memories and just a few heartbreaks. **** I still remember this red-headed monster of a kid from New Orleans hitting one that I swear cleard the light tower’s.

I think most of us are right there with you, and we want to get back to making those great memories.

Canes win 6-4!
Nice bounce-back series win, no surprise we're winning on Sat/Sunday right now though. Kudos to Gino for using Palmquist back to back for 6 out saves - kid is a weapon and appears to have a rubber arm.

Let's use this momentum and go on a roll, although that has been where we've all held our breath the last few years. Shake up the rotation and this team is capable of stringing a few series wins. And I don't see a lot of teams sweeping many series this year - seems to be a lot of parity.

Good series win. Much needed. This team is talented enough to make it to Omaha if the pitching holds up.

And I said that as well. But if you watched all 3 games, you would see that that in 2 of the 3 phases of the game, they are currently much better than we are.
This is such a dumb way to think about baseball, on multiple levels.

First, not all "3 phases" are of equal importance. Pitching is much more important than defense. Miami having better pitching than NC St and NC St having better defense (in your opinion) is advantage-Miami.

Second, being "better" at a phase is mostly irrelevant. What matters is the magnitude of the advantage. NC St may have a better offense than Miami, but the gap isn't huge. On the other hand, NC St's pitching is dramatically worse than Miami's. NC St ran some pitchers out there that didn't look like they belonged in D1, and very few of their guys were impressive (unlike VT). For all of Miami's struggles on the mound this season, the team still has its fair share of studs, and a number of other guys with solid upside.

I don't think Miami is much better than NC St, but I think NC St is a solid tournament team, was at home, and was playing with a chip on its shoulder after last weekend (GT should be a top 5 team tomorrow). And Miami battled all weekend and took 2 out of 3.

Solid start to the year for Gino and the Canes.

Go to a football game. It's the same there. The fans going in are jazzed for the game and full of tailgating food. They leave either happy or think we'll get'em next time.
There are also some people that just don’t want to read *****ing and moaning for 9 innings....most of the threads aren’t overly analytical or nuanced to the game of baseball, it is *****ing, hindsight and being mad that we have not been dominant like we should be, not spin rates, launch angles and money ball...

This thread reeks of the “8-1 bro” football guys. The ones who were concerned about how we won, ended up being right about that. We will be right again, bc how you play, is what’s sustainable.

Keep that garbage out of here. This board is the best bc we discuss all parts of the game and details of how we won or lost. What works and what doesn’t. We don’t need “we won bro,” guys coming in here on Sunday and diluting the conversation.
Miami is 5-4 with a -3 run differential through 9 games. 3 road games vs a top 5 team, 3 home games vs a top 20 team, and 3 road games vs another likely tournament team.

To have that record and that run differential vs. that schedule is pretty solid. It suggests Miami is basically a tournament lock and has a good shot to host a regional. And the fact Miami has done that with such a young team, with the veterans mostly underperforming, suggests Miami can perhaps be a top 8 seed if things start to click.

Keep your garbage subjective "sustainability" out of here. "Miami is bad bc my eye test says it's bad!" Discussing sustainability is fair but not when there are no facts behind it, as seems to be the case here.

Not that much better on offense? We’re talking about the best lineup in the ACC against the 13th best, as of today. Will it stay that way all year? Honestly idk but I prefaced these facts as “current.” If we’re talking about defense, yes it is important. We’ve made 16 errors in 9 games. That’s not a mark of a successful team. Those things will catch up to you. Pitchers are only as good as the 7 guys behind them.

Imagine thinking having a -3 run differential isn’t an issue. If that stays true we’ll finish with almost a -20 differential. Yes I’m sure that’ll lead to a lot of success.

Is defense as important as pitching? Yes/no

And do you think Miami has the 13th best lineup in the ACC? Yes/no

If your answer to those questions is yes, then I'll respect your opinion for being intellectually consistent, but I'll disagree with it.

Defense can be as important as pitching. As I’ve stated averaging over an error a game is going to kill this team. Errors lead to higher pitch counts and more bullpen usage.

Currently, yes it is.

LOL seriously? -3 run differential is basically a push. It's not meaningfully different than a 0 or +3 differential at this point in the season.

Being at a push vs a schedule of tournament teams (including a national seed) and 2/3rd road games suggests that we are a solid tournament team and a likely host.

Extrapolating that -3 to the entire season is incredibly silly. We won't be playing top 5 teams on the road for 1/3 of our remaining schedule, and more than 1/3 of our remaining games will be at home.

(Disclaimer: it is only 9 games in so it's too early to draw too many conclusions, but since the mopes are out moping after a win, I figured I'd engage.)

Nice job dodging both questions. You could have just said, "yes defense is as important as pitching and yes we have the 13th best lineup in the ACC". Your answers indicate you don't believe those things, which is good, because that would be really silly.

But if you need to go through mental acrobatics to argue that the team you root for stinks, after a win, then maybe find another hobby.
