Must EEs Count Against Previous Class Numbers or Can Count?

So if in c/o 2019 you had 20 entries and lets say none were EEs counting toward 2018 AND for 2020 you have 8 potential EEs. Can only 5 be EEs and 3 wait to join the team in Fall or all 8 can bee EEs but 5 would count 2019 and 3 would count for 2020 even though they were EEs.

Your question is misguided. Anyone can enroll at UM whenever they want. Nobody has to "wait to join the team in Fall". If we wanted to do so, we could enroll 25 high school signees in January.

As for the impact of the Initial Counter rules, you can take 25 per year, and Initial Counters include both high school signees and portal transfers and JuCos. We did NOT have "20 entries" in 2019, because all of our portal transfers last year count against the numbers too.

We can take 25 guys this year (whether they enroll in January, June, or August), between the high school signees, portal transfers, and JuCos. That number MIGHT exceed 25, to the extent that we are allowed to add to the number due to the mid-year graduate exception.

So we might hit 26 or 27, all in (HS, portal, JuCo). They can enroll between January and August. Whenever they are ready.

So if the cap is 25 is the cap how are teams able to go over ?

What @TheOriginalCane said.

But to reiterate, if you have more recruits that want to EE than you have Initial Counter ("IC") spots remaining from the previous class, it does not impact an EE recruits' ability to enroll in January. Some recruits will count as ICs towards last year's class, and others will count as ICs towards this year's class, but they all can enroll in January.

As it relates to UM, I think we have something like 12-13 potential early enrollees in the 2020 class. None of them will count towards the 2019 class numbers. All of them can still enroll in January (assuming academics are in order).

thanks. I assume there is some NCAA rule/paragraph on this. Would be nice to have that handy to truly understand. And were looking at 12-13 EEs? jeez thats great to get a heads start on college and the gym.

We can basically only take 25 this year. Some say 26 or 27 but last year we took a full class and Im not sure where those counter availability are coming from. No one really knows but no reason AT ALL to not have at least 25 new bodies come fall.

See NCAA Division I Manual, Operating Bylaws, Art. 13.9.3.3 and 13.9.3.3.1 (eff. Aug. 1, 2019).

Who goes over? Recently? Under the new IC rules?

Again, there are two main situations where 25 might be exceeded. One usually happens during a coaching change, where the new coach might not get to 25, thus can use the number he was under 25 in the next year to exceed 25. The other situation is the mid-year graduate exception.

The days of signing 33 are long gone.

Maybe someone has gone 1 or 2 over 25, but I don't think anyone has hit 30 since the new rules were instituted.

If you have a specific question about a specific university in a specific year, feel free to post. Otherwise, don't ask a general question of "how are teams able to go over"? They can only "go over" under the stated rules/exceptions.

They have to tweak the rule. It was meant to protect players from being "processed" and forced to transfer. Now starters are grad transferring from P5 to P5 schools in search of bettter draft tape/buzz and freshman/sophomores are portal transferring the moment they don't win a job.

Stanford is getting absolutely destroyed this year. At the rate Miami loses juniors and transfers, we'll never be above 75ish scholarships.

Explain this one to me. They have 28 commits and will get Avante Williams and maybe Justin Shorter. https://247sports.com/college/florida/Season/2020-Football/Commits/

I cant wait for the rule change. Honestly I dont feel FBS to FBS transfers should count if the kid is academically eligible and you are under the 85.
