While I certainly do not expect the following scenario to occur, it just may be a preview into what IS POSSIBLE down the road with the NCAA.
Hypothetically, Hurricane Donna gets on the phone w/ the Presidents/Chancellors of tOSU, USC, Boise State, Tenn, UCF, Oregon and UNC and says something like this:
"I've had it with those *** in Indianoppolis abusing their power and taking all our money. What say we withdraw our football programs and form our own conference, with our own rules & oversight? Hey, we should be able to land a HUGE TV contract & clearly out-draw any NC playoff. Especially if, because we can draw up our own rules of eligibility & amaturism, we can agree to grant our players a stipend of a reasonable amount per month/year. That way we can attract the best players; have the best teams w/ the best product, and the biggest TV network."
No, I realize its not gonna happen like this, but this is what's in store for the NCAA in the future from the Div. 1 football powers. After that, lookout NCAA, your big 'cash-cow' the basketball schools along w/ your tourney is gonna be gone, too.
