How could they possibly be academically eligible this year? Maybe bowl season (after the semester is over) but I can't see how they could be a student in good standing in the middle of the semester?

They have to enroll at Miami and that can't happen mid-semester. There are a few schools that run with trimesters that could accept them and allow them to play some late-season games. While the NCAA is run like the mafia, The U isn't likely to accept someone into classes after the first couple of days of the semester.

Ok. So hypothetically they are free to sign and play immediately but realistically, school deadlines for registration would prevent that.

Now if they were in the portal at the end of August with a coach that was fired, have at it! Burrough should be allowed to play in the Bowl game after sitting out this fall.

Correct. Maybe if a school is on a quarters system or has some funky enrollment rule so technically they can play but getting them actually enrolled in a school is going to realistically stop 90% of them playing at any school of note (meaning p5 I am sure JUCOs and others have different schedules)
